Title:

Age stereotypes – core determinants of development in old age

 

Previous research on age stereotypes is characterized by several blind spots: It has focused (a) on general stereotypes, neglecting domain-specific views on aging, (b) on descriptive stereotypes, neglecting prescriptive age norms, and (c) on shared beliefs, neglecting individual and age-related differences in the endorsement of age stereotypes. Taking into account the complexities of age stereotypes provides a deeper understanding of their functions, acquisition, and implications for life span development. Recent studies from our lab show that differences in the endorsement of age stereotypes reflect internalization and projection processes. They serve the function of organizing development, but they also limit developmental options by propagating rigid normative views of old age and ageing.

About the Speaker:

Klaus Rothermund is a leading expert in aging research and life-span development, serving as Full Professor and Chair of General Psychology at the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena, Germany. A major focus of his research is on age stereotypes, and on how views on aging influence development in old age. For more than a decade, he has been the speaker of the international and interdisciplinary research consortium “Aging as Future”, addressing topics of internalization of age stereotypes, preparation for old age, and age discrimination. He has served as co-chair of the expert committee for the 9th Aging Report of the Federal Government of Germany, and wrote a review on ageism for the Anti-Discrimination Agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. He participated as work group chair for the European Cost Action “No-to-Ageism”. He is editor-in-chief for the journal Cognition & Emotion, and member of the editorial board of Psychology & Aging and Life Span Development and Mental Health.

Title:

In this presentation, I will walk you through my research on cross-linguistic predictors of reading, including both alphabetic and non-alphabetic orthographies, paying particular attention on the synergies between cognitive and environmental factors.

About the Speaker:

Dr. George Georgiou is a full professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta and the Director of the J. P. Das Centre on Developmental and Learning Disabilities. His research focuses on the prevention and remediation of reading disabilities across languages. In 2020, he was seconded to Alberta Education to oversee the development and implementation of the new English Language Arts curriculum. He is currently in charge of developing local norms for the mandatory literacy screening in Alberta. For his research he has received several awards including the Killam Professorship, the McCalla Professorship and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal. In 2018, he was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada.

Title:

Understanding, preventing and treating eating disorders: A brief presentation of some of our studies

 

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder are common conditions with significant negative impact on health and well-being of those afflicted. Anorexia nervosa has one of the highest mortality rates among all psychiatric disorders. In this seminar, I present some of our studies aiming to identify risk factors for the emergence of eating disorders using longitudinal studies, as well as our efforts to prevent actual emergence of eating disorder, and not just reduction of some risk factors, along with studies to improve the outcome of treatments (CBT, ACT, DBT) for adults with various eating disorders.

About the Speaker:

Ata Ghaderi is a research group leader and a full professor of clinical psychology at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. His main research interests are prevention and treatment of eating disorders, conduct disorder, and obesity. He has supervised 25 students to PhD and published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers.

Title:

Cognitive division of the nominal system: the case of gender and classifiers

 

Many Indo-European languages, including Dutch and German, have grammatical gender: nouns either have masculine, feminine, or neuter gender, and that has important repercussions on grammatical agreement in phrases such as “silberner Löffel” (silverMAS spoonMAS), “silberne Gabel” (silverFEM forkFEM), or “silbernes Messer” (silverNEU knifeNEU). However, why is spoon masculine (MAS) in German (“der Löffel”), while fork is feminine (FEM) (“die Gabel”), and knife is neuter (NEU) (“das Messer”)? The answer is probably that the human cognitive system developed grammatical gender in German to subcategorize its nominal system and to bring some structure to the German mental lexicon. The psychological reality of the grammatical feature ‘gender’ has been demonstrated, e.g., in the form of the gender congruency effect. However, many languages do not have grammatical gender, such as Mandarin Chinese, but make use of classifiers. In this talk, I will show that grammatical gender and classifiers fulfil very similar functions and behave similarly in language processing. This supports claims that have been made by theoretical linguists arguing that gender and classifiers are grammatical features functioning     on the same spectrum. From a cognitive perspective the interesting issue is how human cognition has been able to develop at least two different ways, i.e., gender and classifiers, to achieve similar functions in language processing, i.e., subcategorizing the nominal system of language.

About the Speaker:

Niels Schiller received his MA in phonetics, German language and linguistics, and computational linguistics from Trier University (Germany) in 1994. The same year, he was awarded a scholarship from the German Max Planck Society to carry out his PhD research at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. In 1997, he received his PhD in Psychology from the Radboud University in Nijmegen. In his PhD dissertation, he investigated the role of the syllable in lexical access during speech production.

After his PhD, he was a post-doctoral research fellow with the Cognitive Neuropsychology Laboratory of the Psychology Department at Harvard University (1998-2000) and a research scientist of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) at Maastricht University and the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (2000-2003). In 2004, he was appointed professor of psycholinguistics at Maastricht University and in 2006 he moved to Leiden to become professor of psycho- and neurolinguistics at Leiden University. 

Since 2024, he is Chair Professor of Psycho- and Neurolinguistics at City University of Hong Kong and Head of Department of Linguistics and Translation. His research interests include lexico-syntactic, morphological, and phonological encoding processes in mono- and multilingual language production.

Title:

Neurofunctional decoding and modulation of conscious emotional experience in humans – towards ecologically valid models

 

The combination of advanced decoding models with affective neuroimaging has allowed the development of precise and comprehensive neurofunctional fMRI signatures for conscious emotional experiences in humans. The talk will outline the development of fMRI-based whole-brain signatures for accurately decoding conscious emotional experiences (e.g. feelings of fear, anxiety, disgust) and their modulation by neuropeptides (e.g. Oxytocin, Angiotensin II) in humans. The talk will conclude with a critical reflection on how these neuroaffective markers can be translated into ecologically valid signatures for capturing dynamic emotional experiences under close to real-world conditions and for facilitating the evaluation of novel treatments for fear and anxiety.

About the Speaker:

Benjamin Becker is currently a Full Professor at The University of Hong Kong (Department of Psychology) and Director of the Neuroscience of Cognition, Affect and Motivation Lab and the Becker Affect and Motivation Lab. He received his Master and PhD Degrees at the Universities of Trier and Duesseldorf (Germany) and underwent further training at the University of Bonn (Germany). Over the last ten years he has established and led independent international research teams in Germany, China Mainland and Hong Kong (Beckerlab.org). His research aims to explore how the human brain regulates emotional and motivational experiences, how these processes become dysfunctional in mental disorders and how these processes can be modulated by innovative technological and pharmacological means. To this end his team capitalizes on an entire array of strategies, including advanced MRI-neuroimaging, AI-inspired neural decoding, real-time closed-loop brain modulation and pharmacological neuroenhancement (oxytocin, angiotensin II, etc). The endevors led to more than 250 original publications in international journals including Nature Human Behaviour, Advanced Science, Nature Communications, PNAS, Molecular Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry and perspective articles in Nature, TICS, Nature Reviews in Psychology, etc. (> 10000 citations, H-index 54). Professor Becker currently serves on the editorial boards of several international journals, including Psychopharmacology (Principal Editor), Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, or Psychoradiology and was the founding section editor-in-chief of Frontiers in Social and Affective Neuroimaging. He is Clarivate World’s Top 1% scholar in 2024, co-director of the COVID-induced Brain Dysfunction task force of the Global Brain Consortium, and coordinator of the Cognitive Science Programme at the HKU.

Title:

Using eye-tracking experiments and computer simulations to understand skim reading

 

In this talk, I will discuss recent efforts to use eye-tracking experiments and a computer model of eye-movement control (E-Z Reader; Reichle et al., 2012) to better understand how the mental processes that support the comprehension of text during normal reading might change when people engage in skimming.  This work suggests that skimming reflects strategic changes in cognition rather than eye-movement behaviour, further demonstrating the tight but flexible coupling between the eyes and mind during reading.

About the Speaker:

Erik D. Reichle received a B.S. in psychology from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  Since 2017, he has worked at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia) where he is currently a Professor of Cognitive Psychology.  His research uses computer modelling, eye-tracking, and MEG experiments to understand the mental processes that support skilled reading and how those processes are influenced by languages and writing systems.  He has published more than 100 articles on these topics and has recently authored two books: Computational models of reading: A handbook in 2021, and The psychology of reading: Insights from Chinese in 2024.

Prior Expectations of Volatility as a Putative Cognitive Mechanism of Persecutory Delusions
 

Persecutory delusions are common and distressing psychotic symptoms that represent the extreme end of a paranoia continuum. Treatments for persecutory delusions require advancement. Understanding the cognitive mechanisms underlying paranoia and persecutory delusions can help identify novel targets. In this talk, Dr. Sheffield will present background on the predictive coding model of delusions and evidentiary support for elevated volatility priors as a contributor to delusion severity. Dr. Sheffield will discuss the potential role of childhood trauma in increasing risk for paranoia via the elevation of volatility priors.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Sheffield is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Sheffield completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago, her PhD in clinical psychology at Washington University in St Louis, and her post-doctoral fellowship within the Vanderbilt Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Sheffield’s research focuses on identifying cognitive and psychological mechanisms underlying psychotic experiences using neuroimaging, behavioral, and clinical trials approaches. Dr. Sheffield’s research is funded through an R01 and K23 from the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH). Clinically, Dr. Sheffield is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in psychotherapy for individuals with psychosis, using a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBTp) approach.

From a positive psychology perspective, the study of mental health should not focus merely on addressing weaknesses, mending what is lacking, and understanding psychopathology, but also on fostering strengths, building the good life, and turning the average into great. In this seminar, I will present a series of research that demonstrate how a positive psychology approach can be adopted to provide a more holistic picture of mental health in various areas of psychology, including clinical, community, occupational, and educational contexts. In the clinical context, research on how adverse events can lead to not only posttraumatic stress disorder but also posttraumatic growth will be presented. In the community setting, research on how enhanced community quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic brought not only anxiety but also hope will be discussed. In the occupational context, I will present a strengths-based research on migrant domestic workers, in contrast to their usual portrayal as a marginalized working group and victims. Finally, in the educational context, I will talk about the importance of well-being to optimal teaching and learning. The implications of adopting a positive psychology approach to mental health research will be discussed.

 

Lecture: An Overview of Trauma- and Stressor-related Disorders (3:45-4:30pm)

 

This lecture intends to provide an overview of trauma- and stressor-related disorders, a group of psychological disorders that result from exposure to a traumatic or stressful event. The different disorders that fall under this category (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder) will be described. Various models that explain their etiology will also be discussed.

About the Speaker:

Ma. Jenina N. Nalipay is currently a PhD candidate in Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is a Registered Psychologist and also has a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines. She formerly worked at The Education University of Hong Kong, where she managed projects on positive psychology and education, as well as a project funded by the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme on the well-being of migrant domestic workers. As a practitioner, she has worked with children and adolescents who had experienced trauma. She has published more than 50 journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers in the fields of Clinical and Educational Psychology.

In this lecture, you will learn about narrative therapy, a post-modern counselling approach that focuses on the power of stories in shaping our lives and influencing our well-being. You will get an overview of core principles, concepts and techniques of narrative therapy and how it can help us gain new perspectives, find strengths, and create positive change in our lives.

About the Speaker:

An Tong Gong is currently a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before joining CUHK, she was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychology at the University of Hong Kong. She obtained her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology at University College London, where she had also received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Her research focuses on Autism Spectrum Disorder, trauma-related conditions, and their comorbidity and interventions. She is also a practising clinical psychologist working with clients of these studied presentations across Hong Kong SAR, UK, and Mainland China.

Title:

Seminar: Eating disorders in primary care – bridging the gap (2:30-3:30pm)
 
Eating disorders (EDs) are typically seen as severe mental illnesses that require specialist knowledge. However, specialist services often have long waiting lists, and delayed treatments often lead to worse outcomes. Low-intensity cognitive-behavioral therapy (LiCBT) including guided self-help (GSH) is seen as a cost-effective option to increase access to psychological treatments and reduce waiting time. There is good clinical evidence of using LiCBT/GSH for common mental health disorders such has anxiety and depression, but its efficacy in treating EDs is lesser known, as it is traditionally thought to be a specialist area.
This seminar will focus on my experience of implementing web-based guided self-help for ED, and present a series of research papers focusing on the clinical evidence of using GSH in bulimic-spectrum ED to bridge the treatment gap in an international multi-centre randomised controlled trial.
 
 

Lecture: The intersection of obesity and eating disorders (3:45-4:30pm)

 

This lecture talks about how obesity and eating disorders are interconnected. I will focus on bulimic-spectrum eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder from the perspective of clinical psychology. Using a clinical vignette, I will explain how psychologists formulate disordered eating using cognitive behavioural theory. The goals of the lecture are to provide a basic understanding of what bulimic-spectrum eating disorders entail, and to apply psychological models to understand mental health conditions.

About the Speaker:

Dr Vanessa (See Heng) Yim is a clinical psychologist at the National Specialist Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders Service in South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, London, and a visiting researcher at King's College London at the Centre of Research in Eating and Weight Disorders (CREW). She has extensive experience in working with eating disorders in paediatric and adult settings. She received her BSc in Psychology from University College London and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Oxford. Her research interests include eating disorders, internet interventions, psychological trauma, and community psychology.

Title:

Self, non-self, and schizophrenia
 

Self-generated sensations typically feel less salient than externally-generated sensations – the fact that it is difficult to tickle oneself is a well-known example. Consistent with this phenomenon, it is now well-established that self-generated stimuli, such as the sound of one’s own voice, normally evoke less activity in the electroencephalogram (EEG) than physically identical stimuli that are externally-produced. There is growing evidence to suggest that people with schizophrenia exhibit abnormally low levels of ‘self-suppression’, which may account for their characteristic tendency to misattribute self-generated actions to external agents, such as seems to occur in delusions of control. In this talk I will review the behavioural and electrophysiological evidence for self-suppression deficits to self-generated actions in people with schizophrenia. I will then discuss how extending the idea from self-generated actions to self-generated thoughts – such as inner speech – could account for such characteristic psychotic symptoms as auditory-verbal hallucinations. I will conclude with some experimental data suggesting that people with schizophrenia may show self-suppression deficits to inner speech, and that these deficits may be linked to the presence of auditory-verbal hallucinations. 

About the Speaker:

Thomas Whitford is a Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia. His research focuses on using electroencephalography and neuroimaging to explore the neural basis of schizophrenia. Thomas completed his PhD at the University of Sydney in 2007, before undertaking postdoctoral research positions at Harvard University (2008-2010) and the University of Melbourne (2010-2011). He joined UNSW as a faculty member in 2012. In 2014 he received the Young Tall Poppy Science Award from the Australian Institute of Policy and Science and in 2020 was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales, Australia.

Title:

Motor-based prediction in speech production and control

 

Exchanging information with the external world is a prerequisite for our survival, which necessitates specialized brain mechanisms that efficiently link action, perception, and cognitive systems. As in the context of speech -- the most complicated and important communicative behavior -- we hypothesize a motor-based prediction mechanism by which auditory consequences can be predicted in advance based on the programmed motor codes to optimally regulate speaking. Using electrophysiological (EEG, MEG, sEEG) and neuroimaging (fMRI) methods, we have demonstrated the neural network, dynamics, and functional specificity of the motor-based prediction mechanism that mediates basic speaking functions of the agency and online monitoring, as well as higher-order functions such as inner speech. Moreover, we tested the mechanism from a clinical perspective and revealed the relation between impaired motor-based prediction and auditory hallucinations. We further carried out studies that implicate the facilitation effects of motor-based prediction in speech and language learning. The novel research framework of motor-based prediction probes a canonical neural computation for normal cognitive functions in speech, as well as provides critical insights for mental disorders and pedagogical innovation.

About the Speaker:

Xing Tian, Associate professor of Neural and Cognitive sciences at NYU Shanghai. He holds a bachelor's degree in Physics from Peking University and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science from the University of Maryland, College Park. He uses electrophysiology and neuroimaging methods combined with behavioral measurement and computational modeling to study speech and language, sensorimotor integration, as well as higher-order cognitive functions such as learning, memory and mental imagery. He has published more than forty papers in the field of cognitive neuroscience, including Nature Human Behavior, Nature Neuroscience, Current Biology, PLOS Biology, Psychological Science, Cognition. What happens after employees engage in voice behavior, defined as upward communication of suggestions or concerns intended to benefit the work unit or the organization? I answer this question by studying three inter-related areas: 1) communication tactics that enhance endorsement (defined as leaders’ acceptance and implementation of employees’ suggestions or concerns); 2) when and why endorsement would fail to motivate future voice behavior; and 3) the development of voice habit and its consequences on the voicing employees. I will present several published and ongoing research that seeks to expand our knowledge on post-voice outcomes in organizations.

About the Speaker:

Chak Fu Lam is an Associate Professor of Management at City University of Hong Kong. His research examines employee voice behavior, including why employees speak up, how leaders respond to employee voice, and what sustains employee voice over time. His research has appeared in Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Personnel Psychology, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. He received his doctorate in Management and Organization from the University of Michigan. He serves as an Associate Editor at Academy of Management Review and on the editorial boards of Journal of Applied Psychology and Journal of Organizational Behavior. He was awarded as one of five Best Editorial Reviewer for his service at Journal of Applied Psychology in 2021.

Neurofeedback in ADHD and beyond

 

Neurofeedback is a non-pharmacological treatment option that is best studied in ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) but is also used for other mental disorders. Feedback of selected neurophysiological markers of a disorder to patients is used to allow them training self-regulation to reduce these deviations linked to clinical symptoms.
I will present Neurofeedback study designs and findings, insights into specific and nonspecific mechanisms, and evidence from meta-analyses. The focus will be on EEG-based neurofeedback for ADHD, with a brief outlook on other functional imaging  modalities (fNIRS, fMRI) and other neurodevelopmental and affective disorders.

About the Speaker:

Prof. Dr. Daniel Brandeis studies the development of children and adolescents with and without ADHD, dyslexia or aggression by linking brain, behavior, genetic  and environment aspects and translates the findings into neuroscience-based personalized treatments for ADHD and aggression using neurofeedback or biofeedback. His research also focuses on individual development mechanisms as potential biomarkers supporting clinical diagnostics, subtyping, and treatment selection, and on meta-analyses of biomarkers and non-pharmacological treatments allowing a more precise estimate of their effect sizes and clinical significance.

Title:

A Theoretical Framework for Understanding Human Memory Performance

  While human memory research primarily focuses on identifying and understanding behavioral patterns that are consistently shown across experiments, we understand very little about what it is about the way an individual engages with a memory task that leads to good or poor performance. To fill in this gap, we build computational models of memory and derive the optimal behavior under these models for a given memory task. We then compare human behavior to this optimal behavior to diagnose which aspects of human behavior contribute to or hinder good memory performance. Beyond the memory of individuals, we also examine what underlies optimal memory as one interacts with others and environmental cues. Overall, our work in memory performance contributes to a theoretical understanding of what underlies successful memory, as well as opening promising directions for building future systems that can assist one’s memory.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Zhang is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Department of Computer Science at Rutgers University, United States. She is also affiliated with the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Science. Dr. Zhang holds a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, a B.A. from the National University of Singapore, and received postdoctoral training at Princeton University. Her research combines computational modeling, behavioral methods, and neural imaging to understand human learning and memory. Dr. Zhang’s scientific projects are currently funded by two programs at the National Science Foundation in the United States. She is a Fellow of the Psychonomics Society and an associate editor at Open Mind.

Introduction in EEG analysis using the software Brain Vision Analyzer: a two-hour workshop

 

In this workshop, I will give a hands-on introduction to the analysis of EEG data using the software Brain Vision Analyzer. I will guide participants through basic pre-processing steps, like filtering, re-referencing, artefact rejection, and calculating event-related potentials (ERP) for different conditions. We will also look at the use of Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to reduce eye-movement-related artefacts. We will then calculate grand averages and t-tests. The workshop will highlight the strengths of this software that are data visualization across time (waveforms) and space (topographies) and that make it particularly suitable for beginners.

Attendees need to register (CUHK members only) and will later receive a link to install software and download exemplary data. Attendees need to bring their own laptop (Windows) and have installed the software and downloaded the data for the workshop.

About the Speaker:

Urs Maurer is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

His research focuses on cognitive and neural aspects of spoken and written language processing. He is particularly interested in reading acquisition, dyslexia, and second language learning. One goal of his work is to use neural markers of language processing to inform screening and intervention practices for dyslexia. His research involves behavioral and functional neuroimaging techniques, such as EEG and fMRI.

He received his PhD at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He then pursued postdoctoral studies at the University of Zurich and at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. Before joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich, funded through the Swiss National Science Foundation’s prestigious research professor scheme.

Reading Development and Reading Impairment among Chinese Children

 

Good reading comprehension is generally accepted to be a key contributor to all-round scholastic attainment in primary schools globally. In most countries, once children have mastered the basic processes of decoding and word recognition, attention focuses on developing children’s ability to understand the meaning residing in various forms of text and using reading as a vehicle for the learning of subjects across the curriculum. Primary schools devote considerable time to ensuring that students are equipped with the skills necessary for successful reading, and teachers usually use a variety of techniques and practices to promote students’ independent reading competence. In this talk, Dr. Xiao will present her research on investigating cognitive-linguistic correlates of reading acquisition as well as instructional and affective factors (e.g., reading attitude and reading motivation) related to reading development among Chinese normally-developing and dyslexic children. She will then discuss the educational implications for her work and future research possibilities.       

About the Speaker:

Dr. Moon Xiaoyun Xiao is currently a lecturer in the Department of Special Education and Counseling at the Education University of Hong Kong, where she teaches and trains local pre- and in-service teachers in special education and conducts research on literacy development and literacy problems among Chinese children and adolescents. After receiving a Ph.D. in psychology from the Department of Psychology, University of Hong Kong, she started her postdoctoral research work at the Education University of Hong Kong on the project entitled “READ & WRITE: A Jockey Club learning support network” with an endowment of over HK$150 million to provide comprehensive educational support to children with reading and writing difficulties. In this project, she was the co-author of the Hong Kong Test of Specific Learning Difficulties in Reading and Writing for Junior Secondary School Students (Second Edition) (i.e., the diagnostic assessment for Chinese developmental dyslexia in Hong Kong). She joined to develop a 3-tier intervention model to address the varying degrees of needs of students with dyslexia and publish a wide range of learning and teaching resources which have been used by local mainstream schools to provide quality language teaching for all students and to design intervention programs for students with dyslexia. When she conducted her second postdoctoral work at the University of Hong Kong, she used the large-scale datasets in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study to investigate contextual and instructional factors that are important for the development of reading literacy. Her research findings from these two postdoctoral projects have led to the publications of peer-reviewed journal articles.

Cross-linguistic and bilingual influences on child literacy development

 

Over the course of literacy development, children learn to recognize word sounds and meanings on a printed page. Yet, they do so differently across orthographies. One way to examine these cross-linguistic differences is through the lens of young bilingual children, who vary in their proficiency and experiences of learning to read in the two languages. Drawing from both behavioral and neuroimaging evidence from young Chinese-English, Spanish-English bilinguals, and English monolinguals, in this talk, I will discuss my findings on how cross-linguistic and bilingual experiences shape child literacy development.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Kehui Zhang is a Postdoctoral Fellow at NYU Shanghai. She holds PhD, MS and MA degrees from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, and a BS degree from the Pennsylvania State University. Kehui’s research broadly focuses on children’s language and reading development. In particular, she is interested in understanding how bilingualism and reading disabilities (dyslexia) influence the course of language and literacy development. Her research incorporates both behavioral as well as brain imaging approaches, such as functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to unravel the neuro-cognitive mechanism of how children learn to read.

Title:

Cognitive and neural underpinnings of word reading development: An individual difference approach

 

Word reading, a process seemingly simple, is a complex skill. Learning to read is effortful and needs support of multiple cognitive-linguistic abilities. This reading acquisition process parallels a structural and functional change of the brain to process print. I will present a series of studies discussing the impact of literacy-specific experience and domain-general maturation on the development of word reading and its neural correlates. Using data from Hong Kong kindergarten children, I demonstrate a developmental pathway that children capitalize on their inborn cognitive and language abilities to develop the skill of actively reflecting on language structures and writing systems, which then serve as proximate precursors to word reading. Through analyzing data from developmental EEG studies, I argue that the development of N1 specialization to visual words is driven by an interaction between skill improvement and maturation. I will conclude by discussing how the findings inform literacy instruction and assessment. 

About the Speaker:

Dr. Shuting HUO is a research assistant professor in the department of applied social sciences at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her research sits at an intersection of multiple disciplines including developmental psychology, special education, and cognitive neuroscience.  Utilizing statistical modelling and brain imaging methods, she strives to answer the question why children differ on the fundamental academic skills, i.e. word reading, arithmetic, and second language literacy.  Her current interests are biliteracy, dyslexia, and development of EEG specialization for print, etc.

This presentation delves into the fascinating ways our brains use motor simulation and entrainment to enhance our understanding of speech and music. We begin with studies employing fMRI and TMS techniques to reveal how the speech motor cortex assists in making perceptual decisions about lexical tones and consonants, especially in challenging listening environments. The journey continues with experiments that combine eye-tracking and EEG, unveiling the intriguing phenomena of ‘eye tapping’ and ‘blink inhibition’ as key to rhythmic predictions in music listening. These revelations not only challenge our traditional views of neuroanatomical models for speech and music processing but also open new doors for therapeutic applications and the development of human-like speech recognition technologies. 

About the Speaker:

Dr. Yi Du is a research professor at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She received her B.S. from Peking University Health Science Center in 2005 and Ph.D. in Psychology from Peking University in 2011. She further honed her expertise through postdoctoral positions at University of Toronto (Rotman Research Institute) and McGill University (Montreal Neurological Institute) between 2012 and 2015. Her research intricately weaves psychophysics with brain imaging and non-invasive neuromodulation techniques to explore the complexities of human auditory, speech and music cognition. Dr. Du’s work has been featured in prestigious journals including Nature Communications, Science Advances, PNAS, Neuroimage, Journal of Neuroscience, and Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews. Her research is supported by multiple agencies including the Scientific and Technological Innovation 2030 Major Project and National Natural Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars.

Title:

Understanding Reading Development and Impairment in Korean

 

Korean Hangul is an alphabet, but it is also called an alphasyllabary. Korean language and script not only have the characteristics of English as an alphabet, but also the characteristics of Chinese. My talk will first review previous studies on language-universal and language-specific cognitive demands to learn the Korean script Hangul. Next, I like to introduce recent studies focusing on different cognitive strategies for various Korean language learners, including Korean kindergartners and Hong Kong Chinese adult learners as a foreign language, to read and write Korean words. Finally, I will present recent deaf studies on how Korean children with deaf and hard of hearing showed different reading and spelling strategies than their typical hearing peers.

About the Speaker:

Jeung-Ryeul Cho received a B.A. in educational psychology from Ewha Women’s University (Seoul, Korea) and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Louisiana State University, USA. She has been a professor in the department of psychology at Kyungnam University (Changwon, Korea) since 1991. Her research began to explore the processes of word recognition in Korean Hangul, Chinese Hanja and English among Korean adults. Since 2000, her research has focused on literacy development and impairment among Korean children. She has published more than 30 articles in international journals, 5 book chapters, more than 30 articles in Korean domestic journals, and 2 standardized tests, namely, Korean Test of Literacy Diagnosis (2017) and Korean Test of Language and Literacy Skills (2020). In 2018 and 2023, she received two honorary awards from the Korean Ministry of Education for outstanding achievements in academic research.

“Robotic Asians”: Mechanistic Dehumanization and Perceived Self-Control of Asians in the U.S.

 

Past theory and research have documented several stereotypes that explain why biases against Asians can occur, such as being seen as foreign and high achieving. In this talk, I will expand on past work by exploring a unique contributor to biases against Asians based on research on dehumanization and self-regulation. I propose that Asians have historically been viewed in the U.S. as like machines or robotics, indicating that they are subject to “mechanistic dehumanization.” My research team and I examined racial subgroup differences in mechanistic dehumanization in the U.S and how this dehumanization was linked to workplace mistreatments such as the lack of social support and exploitation. In addition, we explored perceived self-control as a predictor of mechanistic dehumanization. Together, these findings offer a unique perspective of biases against Asians, a novel link between the literature on dehumanization and self-regulation, and a timely reminder for people to see the humanity in others to build a more inclusive society. 

About the Speaker:

Dr. Franki Kung earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology at the CUHK and his PhD in Social and Industrial-Organizational Psychology at the University of Waterloo (2018). He is now an Assistant Professor and the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Department of Psychological Sciences at Purdue University. He is a Society of Experimental Social Psychology fellow and has received a number of awards, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. His work focuses on self-regulation, cultural diversity, and conflict management, and is published in journals such as Personality and Social Psychology Review, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Nature Communications.

The Role of Parents in Young Children’s Mathematical Competence and Attitudes

  Early mathematical competence and attitudes are crucial for later mathematical achievement. Given that parents play a crucial role in children’s early learning, it is worthwhile to examine the home mathematics environment they provide for their young children. In this talk, I will first discuss what constitutes the home mathematics environment. I will then describe two scales that I have recently developed to assess home mathematics activities and parents’ use of sustained shared thinking strategies during those activities. Finally, I will present the preliminary findings regarding the effects of various programs for coaching parents to support young children’s mathematical learning.

Sum Kwing Cheung is an Associate Professor and Assistant Head in the Department of Early Childhood Education, and the Co-Director of the Centre for Child and Family Science at The Education University of Hong Kong. Title:

ERP analysis of the micro-structure of human schedule responding: implications for voluntary and involuntary control

 

This study is the first to combine recent advances in the study of both the micro-structure of free-operant responding, and of neural activity, to explore novel theoretical predictions regarding voluntary actions on schedules of reinforcement. Two experiments utilised a multiple random ratio (RR) yoked random interval (RI) schedule of reinforcement versus externally triggered actions to explore the neural correlates of responses that potentially involve conscious (action) and unconscious (habitual) processes. A reduction in neural activity and variability prior to a response is taken to be associated with conscious actions. A modified leaky stochastic accumulator model, with additional access modulating the level of neural noise, was employed. Experiment I demonstrated that responses on RI schedules, especially when performance was approaching optimal with regard to reinforcement collection, were associated with decreased neural noise compared to a yoked externally-triggered response. Experiment II noted that neural noise decreased more following within-bout responses, which represent the ongoing state of behaviour, on both RR and RI schedules compared to before bout-initiation responding, which represent the beginning state of behaviour. This suggests that within-bout responses are more likely to be conscious goal-directed actions than bout-initiation responding. Taken together, these results suggest all schedules are comprised of conscious actions and involuntary habits, but that these are more associated with within-bout than bout-initiation responses, and more associated with strong goal-directed actions. This corroborates previous suggestions based on behavioural data, that only after a response bout has started do humans become aware of those responses and target them towards a goal.

I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Oregon State University in 2013. In 2020, I completed my Doctor of Philosophy degree in Psychology from Swansea University. Currently, since 2021, I am engaged in postdoctoral research at the Department of Psychology in Tsinghua University. My research interests revolve around examining micro-structure of human performance on reinforcement learning schedules and investigating the neural basis of voluntary action within the context of reinforcement learning schedules.

Exploring Morphological Signal Analysis: Unveiling Key Characteristics and Enhancing Information Preservation

 

Signal processing is a long-established discipline, with numerous research methods that have stood the test of time and are still in use today ( Fourier transfer, Wavelet transform etc.). Its application domains are incredibly diverse, spanning various industries including telecommunications, biochemistry, finance, and more. In many instances, such as during signal reconstruction, our pursuit is a high SNR ( in the sense of ?_2 Norm ). However, in some cases, while maintaining a focus on the SNR, we might be more interested in preserving or identifying the inherent characteristics of the signal itself, such as crucial information encapsulated in key points or the location of abrupt changes.

In this talk, we will introduce a novel signal analysis method. In this new approach, we model a single signal as a composition of multiple distinct characteristic signals from a morphological perspective. To elaborate, we will investigate the decomposition of signals into different components, with each component exhibiting a certain degree of sparsity in a specific differential domain. Through this, we can better decompose (or reconstruct) signals to retain vital information. We will demonstrate the feasibility and precision of this signal analysis approach using specific examples from the fields of biology (ECG) and chemistry (Chromatogram). Finally, we will attempt to apply this analysis method to the processing of fNIRS signals.

About the Speaker:

Xiaoran Ning PhD is a scholar and entrepreneur with a deep academic background and extensive professional experience in the field of signal processing. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Beijing Normal University and then went on to achieve his master’s and doctoral degrees in Electrical Engineering from New York University. His primary research focus is signal processing, encompassing various signal processing algorithms, signal morphology, and random signal processing. These studies have wide-ranging applications in fields such as communications, biomedical science, and chemistry.

Early in his career, Xiaoran served as an instructor at New York University, teaching digital signals and stochastic processes. In 2016, he co-founded MuseLab Engineering in Hong Kong and has since been leading the company’s R&D department. Since then, the company has secured a series of invention patents in the fields of A.I. and the IoT.

Title:

Transitioning from Traditional Psychological Studies to Large-Scale Experiments 

  Over the past 20 years, I have been using a theory-driven experimental design to study perception and cognition. In recent years, I have gradually realized that actual situations are often very complex and cannot be accurately described by simplified concepts in usual experimental studies. In response, I am now trying to combine large-scale experiments with machine learning to comprehensively explore a cognitive task. This method can provide a wealth of new information, enabling us to establish a preliminary overarching framework. Based on my experience and other research in the field, I believe that large-scale experiments are a potential new direction for in-depth cognitive research. 

About the Speaker:

Liqiang Huang is a professor in the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He earned his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from UC San Diego. Currently, his research focuses on analyzing various aspects of human cognition through the use of large-scale online experiments, machine learning, and conceptual models.

People do hard things --things that seem from the outsider’s view to be impossibly hard. But they also often turn away from things that are even a bit hard, resulting in failures to progress on self-relevant goals. They have a laser-like focus on who they are and, at the same time, can be easily persuaded of the identity congruence of all manner of things. Identity-based motivation theory is a social psychological theory of goal pursuit and motivation that provides a predictive framework to understand why. I present the theory and supporting experimental evidence.

About the Speaker:

Prof. Daphna Oyserman received a PhD in psychology and social work from the University of Michigan (1987) and served on the faculty of The Hebrew University, Jerusalem before returning to the University of Michigan, where she last held appointments as the Edwin J.Thomas Collegiate Professor of Social Work, Professor of Psychology, and Research Professor in the Institute for Social Research. She is the recipient of a W. T. Grant Faculty Scholar Award, a Humboldt Scientific Contribution Prize of the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and Society for Experimental Social Psychology.

Title:

Staying sane in the race: Promoting Positive Parenting and Parent Well-Being via a Mobile App-Based Parenting Program

 

In Hong Kong, school is stressful for parents and children alike. On a daily basis, many parents struggle as they endeavor to support their children to meet the academic expectations from the school and ensure that their children are competitive in the education system, even as they strive to help their children enjoy a happy childhood. In this talk, I will describe a mobile app-based parenting program that I developed for local parents of school-aged children. I will present results from a randomized controlled trial that tested the effectiveness of the program in promoting positive parenting and parents’ well-being.

About the Speaker:

Ng Fei Yin Florrie is a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She received her BS in psychology as well as MA and PhD in developmental psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She was a postdoctoral fellow at New York University and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her research focuses on understanding the role of parents in children’s motivation and achievement in school, with emphasis on the influence of the sociocultural context. Growing up in Hong Kong, she is particularly interested in how Chinese parents transmit values in the culture to their children through parenting, especially in the academic realm. She has conducted a number of studies in China and the United States to examine how cultural values may shape parents’ cognitions and practices and thereby contribute to children’s academic and socioemotional functioning over time.

Through a few examples, we aim to demystify fNIRs, fostering an understanding of its potential in psychology. This talk is an opportunity for anyone interested in neuroimaging to gain a basic understanding of fNIRs.

About the Speaker:

Prof. Agnes Chan is currently a professor in the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is a clinical neuropsychologist with research interests in neuropsychological assessment and cognitive intervention on individuals with cognitive disorders such as older adults with memory and/or other cognitive impairments. She is the author of the Hong Kong List Learning Test which is a commonly used clinical memory assessment for the Chinese population.  She is also a pioneer in applying photobiomodulation as a cognitive intervention.

In 2022, Dr. Xiangbin Teng became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prior to this, he gained valuable experience at the Max Planck Institutes in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin, Germany. Dr. Teng earned his PhD in Cognition and Perception from New York University. His laboratory is dedicated to deciphering the mechanisms behind human speech comprehension and music appreciation.

Title:

Facilitating Social Integration and Prosocial Behavior: Global Orientations across Cultures

 

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed human behaviors and posed a threat to globalism by spurring a resurgence of nationalism. This talk will give an overview of the theoretical framework of global orientations and its application in behavior, well-being, and intergroup relations. I will present our work using sequential explanatory mixed methods to examine the relationships between global orientations and the attitudes toward symbolic and instrumental integration policies. I will also present a multicultural project on global consciousness predicting prosocial behavior and national consciousness predicting defensive behavior in response to COVID-19. These findings provide implications for the study of global unity and cooperation.

About the Speaker:

Sylvia Xiaohua Chen is a Professor in the Department of Applied Social Sciences, an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Director of the Yan Oi Tong Au Suet Ming Child Development Centre, and Associate Director of the Mental Health Research Centre at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Sylvia’s research interests center around the social psychology of bilingualism and biculturalism, globalization and multiculturalism, personality and social behavior in cultural contexts, as well as cultural diversity and mental health. Currently, she is President of the Asian Association of Social Psychology and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology.

Title:

Juggling two languages in one mind -The mechanisms of bilingual language control and its clinical implications

 

Bilinguals seem to effortlessly choose which language they wish to speak, although studies show that both languages are always active even when bilinguals speak in monolingual contexts. I will present a series of studies on how bilinguals switch languages, thus revealing the mechanisms of bilingual language control. Specifically, I consider how bilinguals manage activation of cognates, which may pose special challenges to bilingual control mechanisms, because of overlap in form (e.g., lemon-檸檬). While cognates sometimes facilitate language switching, in other situations they make it more difficult for bilinguals to switch languages, an effect that is even stronger among patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This work reveals that language switching requires both specialized linguistic processes and domain-general cognitive abilities such as inhibition and monitoring. It also has implications for neuropsychological evaluation of bilinguals.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Chuchu Li is an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. She got her bachelor’s degree at Beijing Normal University, and her PhD in Human Education at University of Maryland College Park. Her research program focusing on bilingualism, including bilingual language control, cross-language difference, second language processing and second language learning. As a researcher at the early stage of career development, Dr. Li has published 24 peer-reviewed articles in highly regarded journals such as Cognition and Journal of Memory and Language, of which 15 were first author. Her current research is supported by the highly competitive K99/R00 grant funded by the National Institute of Health in the US.

Title:

Emotion regulation in aging: What I used to think, what I think now, and where I think we should go next

 

In this talk, I will present the arc of my current thinking about age similarities and differences in emotion regulation. Until recently, I argued that there might be substantial similarity among adult age groups in emotion regulation. But, we recently have conducted several studies that have added some nuance to my thinking. First, we have worked to distinguish emotion regulation strategies from tactics. There seem to be slight, but consistent age differences not in emotion regulation strategies but in tactics - how a strategy is implemented in a particular situation. Certain tactics are common across strategies; for example, some tactics involve upregulating positive aspects of situations, such as focusing on positive aspects of the environment or positive reappraisal, whereas others, such as distraction and detached reappraisal involve downregulating negativity. Second, we have considered concrete aspects of emotional contexts in more detail, such as how tactics vary as a function of objective and subjective situational characteristics and how their use changed during COVID-19. We also have tested specific effects of context on age-related positivity effects in attention by comparing eye tracking in the home to the lab: divergent patterns of age differences in the home as compared to the lab suggest the importance of context in this behavior as well. Together, recent findings have changed my thinking, so that I now believe there are small age differences in emotion regulation but perhaps larger effects of context; future work will continue to investigate specific dimensions of context that may be most important, as well as how to leverage these age and context effects to understand and perhaps intervene on emotion regulation difficulties in cognitively-impaired older adults.

About the Speaker:

Derek M. Isaacowitz is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Lifespan Emotional Development Lab at Northeastern University. He was an undergraduate student at Stanford University, and received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. His research on emotion regulation and social perception in the context of adult development and aging is funded by the National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Mental Health, and Velux Stiftung. This research has appeared in journals such as Psychological Science, Social and Psychological and Personality Science, Emotion, and Psychology and Aging. He is currently editor-in-chief of the Journals of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences and he served as chair of the Social Psychology, Personality and Interpersonal Processes study section at NIH. He has been the recipient of the Springer Early Career Achievement Award from Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging) of the American Psychological Association, the Margret M. and Paul B. Baltes Foundation Award in Behavioral and Social Gerontology, for Outstanding Early Career Contributions, from the Gerontological Society of America, as well as teaching and mentoring awards.

Title:

Improving Young People’s Mental Health: From Basic Science to Co-Production Projects Linking Research, Public Engagement and Clinical Services

 

Research and clinical innovations for young people's mental health have lagged far behind that in adults. Many researchers and clinicians are searching for the right 'recipe' to help, but the complexity of the issue means that we are unlikely to find a magical recipe. Our research group has a strong focus on identifying bio-psycho-social risk and resilience factors. In addition to conventional research studies, we have been piloting Citizen Science methods involving young people as active co-producers of research rather than passive recipients. Project Soothe has collected over 800 soothing photographs and engaged with citizen scientists from over 40 countries. We have also launched an app feature during COVID lockdown, co-curated a Pioneers in Practice: User Guide with a range of charity organisations, and more recently delivered workshops to over 200 children and young people and co-produced wellbeing tools with 9 teams of citizen scientists across schools and other youth groups. Our experience suggests that citizen science methodology offers an empowering experience for young people. More recently, we have also launched a Reading Resilience Network, building bridges between researchers and practitioners to advance our understanding of and intervention for young people’s mental health. We have further launched the Resilience Rucksack initiative, organising ‘Resilience Fairs’ in local schools. In this talk, I will share our findings and the working process of these projects with the audience and hope to inspire a lively discussion on mental health and service provision in which we can share experience between Hong Kong and the UK.

About the Speaker:

Professor Stella Chan is currently the Charlie Waller Chair in Evidence-Based Psychological Treatment at the University of Reading, as well as the Research Lead of the Charlie Waller Institute and the Anxiety and Depression in Children and Young People (AnDY) research clinic. Prior to her current role, she was Chancellor's Fellow, Lecturer and then Reader at the University of Edinburgh between 2012 and 2020. In terms of training, she obtained a DPhil in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford investigating neuro-cognitive mechanisms underlying risk for depression, followed by a professional doctorate in Clinical Psychology which qualified her as a clinical psychologist. Stella is the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator of a number of substantially funded research programmes, as well as being the Founder and University Lead of the Reading Resilience Network launched in partnership with Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. She has held various leadership roles at the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Young Academy of Scotland. She is Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society of Edinburgh (Scotland’s National Academy) and the British Psychological Society (BPS), as well as the winner of the BPS Public Engagement and Media Award. Her work is regularly featured in national newspapers and magazines specialising in mental wellbeing. She works with a wide network of collaborators across academic disciplines, charities, and local communities. She is also a keen contributor to book festival events, public engagement programmes and media engagement activities.

Home learning environment and children’s competencies development

 

Children’s literacy and mathematical competencies are a critical platform for their successful functioning as individuals in society. However, many children are at risk of not reaching sufficient competence levels; in particular those with low socioeconomic status backgrounds who may not receive the home support needed to develop to their full potential. Consequently, we are in need of intervention approaches that support young children’s mathematical and literacy competencies directly, so that they are ready to start school with the ability to learn adequately. In this presentation, I will provide information about children’s development in their home learning environment and discuss findings of (digital) intervention studies in the family context.

About the Speaker:

Frank Niklas is Professor for Educational Psychology and Family Studies at the University of Munich (LMU), Germany. He also holds an honorary position at The University of Melbourne, where he conducted a two-year post-doc fellowship between 2013 and 2015. His research focuses on (digital) interventions in children’s home learning environments and the development of children’s competencies. Currently, his team and he are conducting the longitudinal intervention study “Learning4Kids”, an EU-funded project on the development of mathematical and literacy competencies and the potential effect of learning applications for tablet computers.

Title:

Neural Sensitivity vs. Facilitation in Visual Word Processing

 

Neuroimaging studies compare activation between conditions or groups to make inferences about brain processes. More activation is typically seen as increased sensitivity or engagement of a particular brain process. For example, less brain activation during reading in children with dyslexia would indicate a processing deficit. In some cases, however, less activation is interpreted as more efficient processing, such as in research on intelligence. In our previous research, we have shown that print tuning increases at the beginning of learning to read, but then decreases in later years, presumably reflecting newly emerging sensitivity for visual words in the beginning and more efficient processing later on. In this talk, I will present several recent EEG studies that look at facilitation effects in visual word processing that occur, after a word is repeated, primed, or visible in the parafoveal area. Facilitation may also explain differences between typically developing children and those with dyslexia in Chinese. Implications for neurobiological models of reading are discussed.

About the Speaker:

Urs Maurer is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on cognitive and neural aspects of spoken and written language processing. He is particularly interested in reading acquisition, dyslexia, and second language learning. One goal of his work is to use neural markers of language processing to inform screening and intervention practices for dyslexia. His research involves behavioral and functional neuroimaging techniques, such as EEG and fMRI. He received his PhD at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He then pursued postdoctoral studies at the University of Zurich and at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. Before joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich, funded through the Swiss National Science Foundation’s prestigious research professor scheme.

Title:

Do humans imitate from birth?

 

Imitation in human newborns is widely cited as evidence of an inborn Mirror Neuron System that underpins human social behaviour, even though its existence has been debated for decades. The possibility that newborns do not imitate was reinvigorated in recent years by research from our lab at the University of Queensland.  In this talk I will present original data from the largest-ever longitudinal study of newborn imitation and the first-ever meta-analysis.  I will also discuss international findings from infant EMG experiments which further challenge the claim that newborn humans can imitate.  All of this leads to alternative accounts of the development of imitation and its role in human sociality.

About the Speaker:

Virginia Slaughter is Professor of Psychology at the University of Queensland, Australia, where she founded the Early Cognitive Development Centre. Her research focuses on social and cognitive development in infants and young children, with particular emphasis on social behaviour in infancy, theory-of-mind development and the acquisition of peer interaction skills. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science.

Title:

The facilitation and persistence of motivation: Roles of curiosity and grit

 

Why are some students striving to learn and carrying on their motivation? What makes students persistent? What are the critical reasons behind those phenomena? In this talk, I will introduce my recent work on curiosity and grit with the help of longitudinal design, meta-analysis, and network analysis. Particularly, how curiosity is distinct from the interest in facilitating motivation and learning; and why (recently) grit failed, and how to fix it. In sum, the findings highlight the critical roles of curiosity and grit in the motivational process and in achievement.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Xin Tang is an associate professor at the School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and also holds the title of Docent (equivalent to Associate Professor) at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki. He received his Ph.D. (Psychology) from the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. His research interests include motivation and engagement, academic wellbeing, social-emotional skills. In general, he is striving to understand how to support students’ motivation and positive growth. So far, his work has been appeared in top-ranking journals, such as Learning and Instruction, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, PNAS, Journal of Youth and Adolescence, Teaching and Teacher Education.

Title:

Seminar: Individual and social strategies to promote successful aging at work (9:30am-10:30am)

 

Many countries worldwide experience shifts in the age composition of their workforces. As the workforce ages and becomes increasingly age-diverse, it is critical to understand how aging and age differences in social interactions influence intrapersonal and interpersonal processes. In this talk, I present a series of research projects in which I investigate how knowledge transfer among age-diverse coworkers, self-affirmation after a job loss, and a positive uncertainty mindset contribute to enduring employment and successful aging at work (i.e., the ability and motivation to continue working). Grounded in the self-regulatory model of successful aging at work, the first project investigates how older employees’ knowledge seeking from younger coworkers affects their motivation and ability to continue working. I find that knowledge seeking from younger coworkers is a net contributor to successful aging at work. In the second project, I conducted two longitudinal experiments to examine the effects of a self-affirmation intervention on the reemployment success of individuals who lost their job. I find that engaging in self-affirmation increases the number of job offers and the probability and speed of reemployment. Importantly, the intervention was equally beneficial for individuals below and above the age of 50 years, suggesting that self-affirmation can be a useful means to help older individuals overcome job search challenges. In the third project, I develop and apply the concept of uncertainty mindsets. I find that a positive uncertainty mindset (i.e., recognizing opportunities in uncertainty) can explain unique variance in career planning and individuals’ occupational future time perspective above and beyond chronological age and other established predictors. Together, my research highlights individual and social strategies to promote successful aging at work.

 

Lecture: Job satisfaction: Why it’s important to keep your employees happy (10:45am-11:30am)

 

One of the enduring questions that bedevil managers is whether employee satisfaction, the degree to which people like their jobs, really matters. Is a satisfied employee a more productive employee? In this lecture, you will learn more about the definition, different facets, and measurements of job satisfaction. Julian Pfrombeck is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Management Division of Columbia Business School at Columbia University. He is broadly interested in the psychology of aging and age-diverse workforces. His current research focuses on knowledge exchange between age-diverse employees, age differences in leader-subordinate relationships, and self-regulatory strategies to promote successful aging at work. Before joining Columbia, Julian was a PhD student at the Chair of Work and Organizational Psychology at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, where he received his PhD in 2021.

Seminar: Multimodal neuroimaging approaches to delineate human behaviors (10:00am-11:00am)

 

Over the past decades, the development of advanced neuroimaging technologies, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and electroencephalography (EEG), have enabled psychologists to explore a wide range of brain functions with more objective measures and expand our current understanding of the underlying mechanisms associated with a variety of typical and atypical human behaviors. In this talk, I will briefly introduce our recent work using functional brain imaging techniques to study the brain-behavior association in young girls with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), a single-gene mutation brain disorder that stands as the most common cause of Autism. Moreover, I will present methods we have developed to enhance our ability to study brain dynamics with high spatial and temporal resolution.

 

Lecture: Birds Do It, Bees Do It, Even Human Beings Do It: The Neuroscience of Human Cooperation and communication (11:15am-12:00nn)

 

Human cooperation and communication is a key factor driving economic growth and social progress. In particular, group cooperation between two or more individuals can facilitate complex problem-solving and creativity. This type of social interaction has been recognized as one of the pivotal characteristics that fundamentally distinguish us from other species. In this lecture, I will briefly introduce the basic concepts of human interaction interaction, and what methods and brain imaging techniques can used for assessing human interaction (i.e., inter-brain synchrony). Finally, I will provide perspectives on the future research of this topic. I hope this lecture will inspire students a preliminary thought of what they can do with such methodology in psychological research.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Rihui Li is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences Research (CIBSR) at Stanford University. Before joining Stanford in July 2020, he received his Bachelor (2012) and Master degree (2015) in Biomedical Engineering from Sun Yat-sen University and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Houston (2020). Dr. Li’s research focuses on developing novel brain imaging and computational methods to advance our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying typical and atypical human behaviors (Social interaction, cognitive decline, creative thinking). Dr. Li have authored over 40 scientific papers and have consistently published research work in top-rank journals such as Molecular Psychiatry, NeuroImage, Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, Journal of Psychiatric Research, and IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.

Seminar: Cognitive, neuroanatomical, genetic, and environmental determinants of developmental dyslexia (2:30pm-3:30pm)

 

Developmental dyslexia is a common learning disability affecting the acquisition of fluent reading skills despite normal intelligence and schooling. It is increasingly acknowledged as a genetically influenced disorder with a neurological basis, which in turn engenders cognitive deficits affecting the behavior of reading acquisition. In this talk, I will present my main works on the cognitive, neuroanatomical, and genetic determinants of developmental dyslexia published during the past five years. Moreover, I will also present some of our recent findings regarding how environmental factors influence reading skills and moderate neural and genetic underpinnings of reading dis/ability. These studies lead to our future research on imaging genetics of developmental dyslexia with an interdisciplinary approach.

What is memory? How do we form memories? How do we retrieve memories? Why does memory sometimes fail us? In this lecture, I will give answers for all these questions.  The goals of this lecture are to elucidate the definition of memory, explain the characteristics of different kinds of memory, discuss various explanations for forgetting, discuss how and why memories change over time, describe and explain the brain structures and regions that are the bases for memory, and explain the special types of memory: autobiographical memory, flashbulb memories, eyewitness testimony.

About the Speaker:

Jingjing Zhao received a B.Sc. (Electronic Information and Technology, 2004) and an M.Sc. (Psychology, 2007) from Beijing Normal University, and a Ph.D. (Psychology, 2012) from University of Connecticut. Before she joined the faculty at Shaanxi Normal University in the School of Psychology where she has been a full professor since 2015, she completed two post-doctoral positions at Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris (2012-2014) and National University of Ireland in Galway (2014-2015), respectively. She was awarded Early Career Investigator Prize by the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics (2015) and Outstanding Achievement Award of Scientific Research in Colleges and Universities (Humanities and Social Sciences) with a Youth Achievement Award by Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China (2020). Dr Zhao’s current research interests are the development of language, mathematics, and social cognition, its disorders (e.g., developmental dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, social anxiety disorders) and its determinants at multiple levels of description (e.g., cognitive, neural, genetic, environmental).

Prof. Chan is currently a professor in the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is a clinical neuropsychologist with research interests in neuropsychological assessment and cognitive intervention on individuals with cognitive disorders such as older adults with memory and/or other cognitive impairments. She is the author of the Hong Kong List Learning Test which is a commonly used clinical memory assessment for the Chinese population.  She is also a pioneer in applying photobiomodulation as a cognitive intervention.

Title:

An approach to optimize 3-dimensional brain functional activation image with high resolution: a study on functional near-infrared spectroscopy

 

In this study, 3-dimensional (3-D) enhanced brain-function-map generation and estimation methodology is presented. Optical signals were modelled in the form of numerical optimization problem to infer the best existing waveform of canonical hemodynamic response function. Inter-channel activity patterns were also estimated. The estimation of activation of inter-channel gap depends on the minimization of generalized cross-validation. 3-D brain activation maps were produced through inverse discrete cosine transform. The proposed algorithm acquired significant results for 3-D functional maps with high resolution, in comparison with that of 2-D functional t-maps. A comprehensive analysis by exhibiting images corresponding to several layers has also been appended.

Title:

Mapping Brain Activity and Resting-state Functional Connectivity with Functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy

 

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a non-invasive optical imaging technique to measure cerebral hemodynamics has seen rapid development and increasing use in studying the human brain. fNIRS measures relative changes of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin in the local tissues as a surrogate measurement of neuronal activity, similar to the blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) which is the current golden standard of functional neuroimaging. Compared with fMRI, fNIRS offers competitive advantages, including low cost, portability, and compatibility with medical electronic devices implanted in patients. However, fNIRS has its limitations and faces several challenges. To facilitate the achievement of fNIRS’s tremendous potential in research and clinical applications, my Ph.D. work aimed to tackle several methodological challenges, mainly regarding preprocessing, cross-modal validation with fMRI, and control of movement-related artifacts. The outcomes of my research work have made significant advancements in paving the pathway for using fNIRS as a broadly accessible and noninvasive neuroimaging technique in various clinical applications, such as measuring auditory response in cochlear implant users, mapping resting-state functional connectivity, and monitoring the deterioration of the brain function in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease. The portable and accessible fNIRS will become a powerful tool complementary to fMRI for purposes such as home-based imaging for remote patient monitoring and long-lasting recordings for studying the sleep stages.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Zhang is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington, Seattle. He completed his B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and his Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. His research interests include functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), resting-state functional connectivity, and neurovascular coupling. His Ph.D. work primarily focused on methodological developments and applications of fNIRS in studying the human brain. His long-term research goal is to facilitate the clinical applications of simultaneous multimodal brain imaging with fNIRS and EEG, which are both wearable and cost-effective.

Cultural considerations in personhood and positive psychology for enhancing well-being among people living with dementia

 

Dementia is traditionally understood from a deficit-based approach, focusing on the presence and management of cognitive impairment and behavioSocial Wofural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). More recently, person-centred care and positive psychology concepts have been introduced to understand the experience of living with dementia, acknowledging the importance of maintaining and enhancing well-being in people with dementia. In this seminar, I will present my research journey from identifying the pattern of BPSD across dementia stages to exploring Hong Kong dementia carers’ understanding and response to BPSD. Its implications for future research on positive psychology in the growing Chinese dementia population will also be discussed.

About the Speaker:

Dr Dara Leung is a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong. Her research centres around dementia and late-life depression, with a focus on enhancing the well-being of older people, people with dementia, and their carers. She is involved in multiple international projects on dementia care and a large-scale local project on late-life depression. She also collaborates with researchers from various disciplines, clinical psychologists, social workers, and community stakeholders to transfer research knowledge to the real world.

Title:

Executive control in social contexts

 

Executive control is a diverse group of functions that play an important role in many situations. In recent studies we have explored a new paradigm, the face emotion Stroop task that measures the inhibition component of executive control in social contexts. In this new paradigm emotional facial expressions have to be executed to a verbal prompt vis a vis congruent and incongruent background images. The response latencies and accuracies are quantified frame by frame by a machine classifier. We have explored the fruitfulness of this paradigm in mothers and non-mothers vis a vis pictures of angry and happy infants and adults and in adolescents with different amounts of adverse childhood experiences and different degrees of violent behavior. In all these studies the face emotion Stroop has proven sensitive to social factors and in the case of violent behaviour may be more sensitive than the classic colour Stroop test. Therefore we suggest that the face emotion Stroop task may be a suitable instrument to measure inhibition in emotionally loaded social situations.

About the Speaker:

Prof. Dr. Werner Sommer received his PhD in Psychology from the University of Konstanz in 1982 and was Professor of Biological Psychology and Psychophysiology at the Humboldt University at Berlin until his retirement in 2018, after which he continued his research and supervising activities in collaboration with researchers in Germany, China including the SAR Hongkong, Iran, Kenia, Poland, and Spain. He has worked and still works in diverse areas, such as spoken and written language perception, movement preparation, cognitive conflicts, face recognition, emotion processing, methodology of event-related potential analysis and eye tracking, the Psychology of meals and food preferences, and individual differences in social cognition and cognitive functions. Werner Sommer has received numerous research grants and several visiting professorships, for example from the HKBU, the SCNU and the Zhejiang University.

Title:

Subjective Social Status, Area Deprivation, and Gender Differences in Mental Health among Chinese Older People

 

This study examined the gender differences in the main and interactive effects of subjective social status and area deprivation on mental health among older adults in Hong Kong. Data for this study came from the baseline of MrOs and MsOs studies, including 4000 Chinese men and women ≥ 65 in Hong Kong. Our results reaffirm that subjective social status is an independent indicator of health after adjusting for objective SES measures. Although area-level social deprivation was not significantly associated with the health of older people, it may moderate the effect of subjective social status on health. Women with a lower perceived status in the community were more likely to experience depressive symptoms when living in more deprived neighborhoods. The findings suggested that subjective social status provides important information for mental health of the older population. Policymakers may implement interventions to enhance the subjective social status of older adults.

Xi Chen is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy, Lingnan University, Hong Kong. She obtained her PhD in sociology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  Her research interests include mental health, health-risk behavior and health inequality. Unpacking parental influences on children’s early language and literacy development

 

The role of parents and caregivers in children’s early language and literacy development is undeniable. Through our research with children and families from different societies, we have examined how parental influences can be transmitted to children’s outcomes and whether their developmental dynamics are comparable across different family contexts. In this seminar, I will present some of our recent studies on the environmental correlates of early language and literacy development. A particular focus will be placed on the mediating and moderating factors in the associations between parental factors and children’s skills. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings will be discussed.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Tomohiro Inoue currently works as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He formerly worked at Seigakuin University, Japan Society for Promotion of Science, and the University of Alberta. Children’s understanding of teaching and learning: A Theory of Mind perspective

 

How children understand the concepts of teaching and learning is associated with their developing theory of mind, the ability to attribute desire, belief, intention, emotion, and knowledge, to self and others. In three empirical studies, I will introduce a set of purposefully designed tasks to assess children’s teaching and learning comprehension, a psychometrically validated scale of the Preschool Teaching and Learning Comprehension Index (PTLCI), and a new theory of mind training study to enhance children’s teaching and learning comprehension through shared picture book reading. I will also debut a set of research-based original picture books in Chinese for training purpose.

About the Speaker:

Dr WANG Zhenlin is an assistant professor at the Department of Psychology, The Education University of Hong Kong. Trained as an early childhood teacher in Shannxi Normal University, she went on to pursue her postgraduate studies in developmental psychology. She holds two doctoral degrees from the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania, respectively. She was an exchange scholar at Harvard University and a visiting scholar at University of Cambridge. Her research is sponsored by Hong Kong University Grants Committee’s General Research Funds and UK Economic and Social Research Council/ Hong Kong University Grants Committee Joint Research Scheme. Currently she serves as an associate editor for British Journal of Developmental Psychology. Her extensive research interests are reflected in her diverse publications ranging from the cultural, contextual, and familial influences on the development of children’s social cognition to its implication in children's social and cognitive functioning and early childhood teaching and learning.

Title:

Does Low-intensity Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (LiCBT) deliver its promises in Hong Kong?

 

About six years ago, the Department established a new concentration area in its undergraduate programme, Guided Self-help, drawing on then a new form of psychological intervention, Low-intensity Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (LiCBT). It is an adapted form of CBT designed for delivery by graduates with only a Bachelor's degree, frequently in psychology. It differs from the traditional CBT which is delivered by fully trained clinical psychologists with at least a Master's or doctoral degree. Research in UK and Australia has documented promising evidence for the effectiveness of the LiCBT, while it has the inherent advantages of being cost-saving and thus increasing accessibility of psychological intervention to the community. This is the background which leads the Department to establish the new concentration area. Yet, one important question remains: Does LiCBT deliver its promises when practiced in Hong Kong? This talk is going to present data from two local cohorts of clients receiving LiCBT, the first cohort involving 300+ clients while the second cohort 1,000+ clients. Besides post-treatment outcomes, follow-up data are also available from the second cohort. It is high time that the Department examines whether its education delivers.

About the Speaker:

Patrick W L Leung is a research professor at the Department of Psychology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his BSSc in Psychology and MSSc in Clinical Psychology from The University of Hong Kong and his PhD from University of Sheffield. UK. He worked in a local children's hospital for more than 10 years as a clinical psychologist before joining CUHK in early nineties. His research interests are in child and adolescent psychiatry, including neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Recently, he is also interested in conducting clinical trials, validating various forms of psychological intervention to different mental disorders.

Seminar: Viewing the development and aging of frontal lobe functions through the lens of fNIRS (10:30am-11:30am)

 

The frontal lobes are the executive centers of the brain. Compared with the rest of the brain, these regions are the last to reach full maturity but are the first to undergo deterioration with aging. Clarifying how frontal lobe functions change throughout the lifespan, both typically and atypically, can give us invaluable insights into alterations in higher-order cognitive functions over time. In this talk, I will be presenting on my work with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) that addresses the development and aging of frontal lobe functions. Specifically, I will highlight fNIRS evidence that informs neurocognitive development and aging in healthy individuals, and that demonstrates associations between frontal lobe dysfunction and cognitive impairment in autism spectrum disorder and mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Research implications and future research directions will be discussed.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Michael Yeung is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). He obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology, with a specialization in neuropsychology, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before joining PolyU, Dr. Yeung was a postdoctoral researcher at the Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University in Canada. Dr. Yeung’s research interest is in understanding human frontal lobe functions, particularly in the context of lifespan development and psychopathology. His research used a variety of cognitive neuroscience methods, including functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG).

Current social science research has constantly highlighted the significance of understanding the human factor within virtual ecology. The emergence of Metaverse, AI, XR and other virtual technologies provide researchers with an opportunity to study the human-computer experience (HCE) for diverse research purposes. This research seminar is going to share some of my previous investigations and findings about studying user experiences in XR from various perspectives. My studies had covered the use of XR in the areas of social science, business, organizational studies, education, and most significantly in design thinking and creativity education. This seminar is also trying to explore the future research domains on HCE in response to the rapid change of digital landscape and technologies.

The entire virtual ecology has much bigger and complicated then what we think that overturns the ways of human interactions and user-computer experiences. As the “Metaverse” concept is starting to incorporate Web3 technology enabled through blockchain technology, this virtual platform is expected to play a huge role in re-shaping the virtual landscape as well as human interactions. Thus, this introductory online lecture is going to provide audiences with a clear picture of what virtual ecology is, and its attributes as well as the future challenges to human-computer experiences.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Lau Kung Wong is an active researcher, academic, XR & AI expert, social scientist and practitioner. His ongoing research, teaching and practice areas involves (1) User Experiences Studies in Extended Reality; (2) Digital Media and Human Interaction; and (3) Innovation Studies and Creative Industry. After he obtained his Ph.D. in the area of studying human/user experiences and virtual reality from the IoE, University College London (UCL), he had been actively in researching and publishing about human-computer interaction, the use of virtual reality, augmented reality, serious games, and other interactive platforms for various purposes.  Moreover, “Design Thinking” and “Creativity Education” is another significant research scope for Dr Lau. Despite he has coined his own model for creative thinking process, and with various publications on creative assessment and creative thinking methods in academic arena, he is actively participating in diverse creative professional bodies, such as being an advisor of creativity education for the UNESCO, worked as a chief examiner at HKEAA, and the subject specialist of creative industry for the HKCAA.

Title:

Privacy Invasion in Adolescence: Implications for Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Regulation

 

Privacy helps to regulate both interpersonal interactions and intrapersonal states. As adolescence is a sensitive period for both social relationship and self-regulation development, it is perhaps not surprising that many family conflicts involve disagreements about the limits and value of young people’s privacy. This colloquium examines whether adolescents’ experiences of privacy invasion are associated with problems in interpersonal and intrapersonal functioning, devoting special attention to difficulties in family communication and youth emotion regulation. Incorporating data from both Eastern and Western contexts, this talk will also address whether the regulatory functions of adolescent privacy transcend cultural differences in family power structures and interpersonal boundary construction.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Skyler HAWK is an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at CUHK. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Drake University, and Masters degrees in Social Psychology (University of Hawaii-Manoa) and Adolescent Development (Utrecht University). He received his Ph.D. in Experimental Social Psychology from the University of Amsterdam, examining the topics of emotion expression and empathy.  He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Utrecht University's Research Centre for Adolescent Development, where he studied the role of empathy in parent-child conflict resolution, as well as the development of adolescent privacy and experiences of parental privacy invasion.

His current areas of research interest and specialization include privacy and information management in close relationships, emotion communication and regulation, and adolescent social media behavior.

Title:

Studying sibling relationships using a within-family design

 

Characterised by involuntary and intense love-hate dynamics, sibling relationships can be impactful: Siblings can shape child development directly, by being warm and conflictual with each other. Siblings can also shape child development indirectly, by allowing parental differential treatment to happen in the family. Interestingly, few studies have been conducted on sibling relationships in Asia—a region well-known for its strong emphasis on the family. In this talk, the speaker will talk about how longitudinal data collected on two siblings from each of 200 Chinese families could be used to explore the contribution of sibling relationships to child adjustment.

Title:

Childhood Gender Nonconformity in the Community

 

Gender is an important factor in human development. In children, behavioral gender expressions can be found in occupational aspirations, appearance, play and activities, and traits. While traditional theories and studies have attempted to explain normative gender development, there is increasing recognition of diversity in gender expression, coupled with increasing reports of gender dysphoria and gender nonconformity in the West. This seminar will present findings on children’s appraisals of gender nonconformity and new data on prevalence of childhood gender nonconformity and its mental health correlates in a Chinese community sample. Discussion will focus on how these findings compare to known patterns in Western cultures, as well as the potential to drive forward research on gender nonconformity and apply a screening tool for gender dysphoria in Chinese communities.

About the Speaker:

Ivy Wong obtained her PhD in Social and Developmental Psychology from Cambridge University and is currently Associate Professor of Gender Studies and Psychology (by courtesy) and Assistant Dean of Interdisciplinary Programmes of the Faculty of Social Science at CUHK. Her expertise is gender development and she is particularly interested in everyday issues that necessitate a scientific understanding of gender, such as gender-typed play, gender segregation and gender stereotypes. More recently she conducted cross-cultural work on gender nonconformity and edited the Springer book Gender and Sexuality Development: Contemporary Theory and Research.

Title:

The role of spatial ability in mathematical problem-solving

 

Recent studies have suggested a strong relation between spatial ability and mathematical problem-solving, but we have less knowledge about why this is the case. In this talk, I will demonstrate three possible mechanisms that may explain the relation between spatial ability and mathematical problem-solving, and they are the representation of numerical magnitude (i.e., knowing what numbers represent), the understanding of arithmetic operation (i.e., knowing how +, -, × and ÷ work), and the conversion from word problems to numerical expressions. I will also report a study that provides empirical support to all three pathways. Potential theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Terry Wong is an Assistant Professor in Department of Psychology, the University of Hong Kong. He is also an Educational Psychologist. His work focuses on the development of mathematical competence among children and adolescents. He is also interested in other aspects of cognitive development such as spatial processing, logical reasoning, scientific thinking, moral reasoning, etc. Terry was awarded the Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science in 2018.

Title:

Psychological challenges in cardiac rehabilitation

 

This presentation highlights the bidirectional relationship between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and behavioural and psychological factors. Most of the risk-factors are behavioural, and after a CVD event the challenges for rehabilitation and secondary prevention are to a large extent behavioural and psychological. To investigate how emotional distress affects risk-factor management and survival, and to identify patients at risk for emotional distress after a myocardial infarction (MI), large national quality registers were utilized. The results will be presented and discussed. As will results from clinical trials investigating interned-based psychological treatments for MI patients experiencing emotional distress. A certain focus will be put on the specific challenges of internet interventions.

About the Speaker:

Erik Olsson is associate professor and senior lecturer at Uppsala University in Sweden. Originally a clinical psychologist his research interest lies within the interdisciplinary field between psychology and cardiology. He is a visiting scholar at the Department of Psychology through CUHK’s collaboration with the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) and is running a course called Cardiac Psychology for undergraduates during the fall of 2021.

Title:

Automatic and controlled processes in cyberbullying: human-computer interaction and group differences

 

In recent years, more researchers have become aware of the unique characteristics of online communication that promote deindividuation. As a result, some researchers argue that automatic processes play a more significant role in cyberbullying than controlled processes, but findings on the role of automatic processes remain mixed. In this seminar, I will present an overview of my research on the automatic processes (fun and thrill) and controlled processes (moral disengagement and normative beliefs) in cyberbullying with a focus on how the interaction between online and offline factors may explain individual and group differences (age and cross-cultural differences) in cyberbullying. The role of psychosocial development in human-computer interactions will be highlighted. Implications on how a systematic account for online and offline factors in cyberbullying can fill gaps in current research and intervention designs will be drawn.

Natalie WONG is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Educational Psychology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has published theoretical and intervention research on cyberbullying and social development in journals such as Computers in Human Behavior, Personality and Individual Differences, and the Journal of Cross-cultural Psychology. Why Chinese is so hard? CSL learning of Hong Kong’s ethnic minority students

 

Chinese has long been considered a difficult second language, due to its unique and complex writing system. Differing from alphabetic languages, Chinese is morpho-syllabic, having Chinese characters as its basic units. A fluent Chinese reader and writer must acquire a rich repertoire of Chinese characters and be well versed in these orthographic characteristics. This is a hurdle for Chinese as a second language (CSL) learners and, henceforth, developing literacy skills has been a major concern in CSL education. This is also true for the ethnic minority children who are learning CSL in Hong Kong. They find acquiring literacy skills a difficulty, and its implications for their academic advancement and social integration have aroused much social concern. In this seminar, I will present the findings of my studies on the students’ CSL literacy acquisition and development, covering topics such as influences of metalinguistic awareness on character reading and spelling, role of decoding played in reading comprehension, and reading–writing relationship. I will argue that, for the young CSL learners, acquiring a good Chinese orthographic knowledge is crucial for their literacy development.

About the Speaker:

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction of CUHK, for which I joined as an Assistant Professor in 2015. Before that, I worked in the education sector as a secondary school Chinese language teacher and a curriculum development officer at the Hong Kong Education Bureau. During my tenure in the Bureau, I first came to know about Hong Kong’s ethnic minority students and their learning of, and struggle with, the Chinese language. Their Chinese literacy acquisition was the topic of my 2010 doctoral thesis; it has also been my major research interest ever since.

The Need for a Cultural Psychological Approach to Discrimination on the Basis of Skin Color in Asia

 

A strong preference for fair skin appears to be the norm across the Asian continent and may pervade many aspects of social life. Yet scholarly work on this ubiquitous phenomenon is (a) rare within psychological science, and (b) predominantly treats it as situated only within the individual, abstracted from the social context. In this talk, I argue that colorism has firm systemic roots as a result of the sociohistorical trajectories of different Asian societies that have attached cultural meanings to skin color. Consequently, similarities and differences in such trajectories may account for variability in the expression of colorism within contemporary Asian societies.

About the Speaker:

Karim Bettache acquired his BSc and MSc in psychology at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and his PhD in psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, under the supervision of Takeshi Hamamura and Prof. Fanny Cheung. He specializes in cultural, political and social psychology. His work tries to connect individual psychological phenomena to broader socio-historical and economic contexts of human societies (e.g., colonialism or neoliberalism). Hence, his work strongly overlaps with other social sciences such as sociology and the political sciences. Prof. Bettache has further worked as a postdoctoral fellow with the Dean of Social Science (CUHK), Professor Chi-yue Chiu. He subsequently worked as a lecturer for Monash University. He currently works as an Assistant Professor for the Faculty of Social Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

C-tactile afferents—A somatosensory fiber that keeps us “in touch”

 

Humans, like many other social animals, naturally engage in friendly physical contact with conspecifics. Research suggests such contact has a number of regulatory effects concerning, for example, internal bodily processes as in the context of stress and the way we relate and bond with others. As such physical contact may be compared to essentials like food and water for which consumption excites pleasure, which in turn drives the consumatory behavior. Our current understanding of the somatosensory system links the pleasure arising from physical contact to a specific mechanoreceptor called the C-tactile afferent. In this talk, I will introduce this receptor and detail work conducted by others and my own group elucidating receptor properties, central-nervous system projections, and modulatory effects on brain structure and function. Moreover, I will compare and contrast the C-tactile afferent with other mechanoreceptors asking to what extent its processes are especially relevant for keeping us “in touch” with each other.

About the Speaker:

Annett Schirmer obtained her PhD in 2002 for research conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Germany. After working there as a post-doctoral fellow, she moved to the University of Georgia, USA in 2004 and to the National University of Singapore in 2006. She has been appointed as a full-professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2017. Annett Schirmer’s work focuses on nonverbal communication with a particular emphasis on interpersonal touch. She has authored a textbook on Emotions that appeared with Sage and published many empirical articles in a range of international outlets including, for example, Cerebral Cortex, Emotion and Neuroimage. Annett Schirmer has been contributing to the field as an associate editor of The British Journal of Psychology and Social, Cognitive and Affective Sciences.

Conditional Process Analysis: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach

 

In social science research, the analysis of moderation, mediation, and conditional process (models that combine both mediation and moderation processes) has become increasingly popular.  These models are important because they allow researchers to understand, describe, and explain complex social phenomenon and human behavior in a more accurate way.  Traditionally, conditional process models are analyzed by the regression-based approach.  This approach, however, does not provide the goodness-of-fit test and therefore there is no way to tell if a hypothesized model fits the data adequately.  In this seminar, a structural equation modeling (SEM)-based approach is proposed as an alternative.  In addition, I will introduce the VS, a computer software program that implements the proposed SEM approach for conditional process analysis.

Psychologists have provided abundant evidence demonstrating individual variations in cognition and social behaviors across the human lifespan. Two important sources of individual differences in cognition are age and socio-cultural environment, each of which has been closely investigated. With increased age, adults show declined performance in many neurocognitive domains, including memory, spatial navigation, and inhibitory control. With respect to socio-cultural environment, there are considerable individual variations in the way people process contextual information, including attention, motivation, and self-presentation. The interaction between age and environment provides various implications for psychological researches as age represents the effect of biological processes whereas environment represents the effect of sustaining experiences. In this talk, I will review the different research lines and interdisciplinary approaches we are carrying out in the lab to understand how cognitive functions and social behavior change and adapt as we age in different socio-cultural settings on the behavioral and neural levels. Despite age-related declines in behavior and cognition were reported as a dominant picture of the aging mind, our compelling evidence from cognitive and social neuroscience of aging are stimulating new hypotheses and provide a more integrative view of the aging mind.

 

Lecture: Aging Gracefully: The Contribution of Psychology (3:45pm - 4:30pm)

 

Biological aging faces the potential storm of physiological and psychological deterioration that can heavily impact individuals’ ability to perform everyday cognition and behavior. While there is a large amount of work on age-related neurodegenerative and mental disorders, it is often conceptualized from the genetic, biochemical, and clinical perspectives, and less from the cognitive, psychological, and social sides. This one-sided depiction of aging limits how a society views the healthy aging process, and limits the elderly’s maintenance of vital components for staying active and aging gracefully. This lecture will provide an introductory overview of how the psychology of aging contributes to promote mental health, improve neurocognitive vitality, and enhance positive emotional functioning. I hope this lecture will provide students a psychological view of the healthy aging mind, thus helping develop the sustainable age-friendly communities in Hong Kong.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Chih-Mao Huang is the Director of Cognitive, Social, and Clinical Psychology of Aging Laboratory and an Associate Professor at Department of Biological Science and Technology in National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. He received his PhD from the Department of Psychology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The overarching goal of his research is to understand how behavior, cognition, and brain change and adapt as we age in different socio-cultural settings. He brings psychological, neuroscientific, and computational approaches to examine age-related and individual differences in cognitive, affective, and social changes across the human lifespan using behavioral responses, neuropsychological assessment, and human neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, EEG/ERPs, and fNIRS). Dr. Huang has taught Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on Psychology of Aging in mainland China and Taiwan since 2016. He was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award and Distinguished Mentor Award in 2018 and 2020, respectively.

Seminar: Neural specialization during reading development (10:30am -11:30am)

 

Neural specialization is characterized by increased neural activity for relevant tasks and decreased neural activity for irrelevant tasks. The brain becomes more specialized during the acquisition of expertise. I study neural specialization in the case of reading acquisition and development. I will show evidence of neural specialization from cross-linguistic comparisons of reading development, and second language learning, as well as altered neural specialization in reading disability. Future research is sorely needed to understand how neural specialization and learning can be facilitated.

 

Lecture: Introduction to Developmental Neurological Disorders (11:45am - 12:30pm)

 

In this undergraduate level lecture, I will introduce developmental cognitive disorders (DCD), including essential characteristics of DCD, the relationship between genes, brain and behaviors in DCD, etc. I will also discuss one type of DCD in more detail, namely, developmental dyslexia. I will introduce its definition, its diagnosis and interventions, as well as what we need to study about developmental dyslexia.

About the Speaker:

Fan Cao is a professor at the Department of Psychology, Sun Yat-Sen University. Prior to joining Sun Yat-Sen University in 2017, she was a faculty at Michigan State University. After undergraduate and master training in psychology at Beijing Normal University, Cao completed her Ph.D. in communication sciences and disorders at Northwestern University with a research focus on reading development and disorders. Cao completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh where she started her research on bilingualism. Her first faculty position was at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where she was entitled Nanyang Assistant Professor, before she moved to Michigan State University.

Seminar: Maximizing the benefits of testing (10:30am -11:30am)

 

Conventional wisdom in education states that the best way to enhance learning is to provide additional study opportunities and that the role of tests is merely to measure what has been learned during study. Although assessment is certainly one function of testing, the importance of testing, per se, for improving learning has received greater attention of late. While researchers have conducted numerous studies to understand the nature of the testing effect, there has been far less research investigating the neural mechanisms underlying this effect and it is less clear how to maximize the effect of testing and expand the benefits to non-tested but related information. The goal of this talk is to shed light on these questions by examining the key factors that define the boundary of the testing effect. In particular, empirical experiments and computational models will be reported to address the issue of what it is about attempting to retrieve the answer from memory that enhances learning more than study.

 

Lecture: The mechanisms of memory and what affects it (11:45am - 12:30pm)

 

Other than that which is genetically coded, everything we know is derived from and reflects memory for our past experiences. Memory is at the heart of virtually all other psychological processes and behaviors, from the ability to temporarily remember a phone number or where you placed your keys to the acquisition of language and the ability to reason. This lecture will provide an introductory overview of classic and current issues in human memory, examining how people acquire, retrieve, and use information. After this lecture, you will probably forget more than 90% of the theories, experiments, and names presented to you, but hopefully you will think more critically about memory in your everyday lives.

About the Speaker:

Xiaonan Liu is an Assistant Project Scientist in the Center for Neuroscience and Department of Psychology at University of California, Davis. He obtained his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on how memory is dynamically strengthened, altered, and integrated, as well as the brain structures that support these processes, using behavioral studies, neuroimaging (both EEG and fMRI), machine learning, and biologically based computational modeling

In the past decades, numerous research studies have proliferated in studying the effects of mindfulness on well-being. Although secularized, mindfulness has its roots in Buddhism, which has a web of interrelated constructs in explaining the human condition and ways to improve well-being. The presentation will share some of the efforts of our lab in conceptualizing and empirically investigating the effects of Buddhism-derived constructs (i.e., interconnectedness, stillness) on both individual (e.g., mental health) and collective (e.g., social justice) well-being.

Left-handed Children: Blessing or Curse?

 

The relationship between handedness and language/cognitive abilities is a controversial topic. Despite the popular belief that left-handers are more intelligent and have cognitive benefits, many studies failed to find the difference or reported opposite findings. The study to be shared in this seminar will try to dispel some of the myths by addressing four research questions related to handedness in Hong Kong school-aged children, including: 1) What is the prevalence of left-handed children in Hong Kong? 2) Is handedness heritable and what is its heritability in Chinese? 3) Is there an association between hand preference and children’s language abilities? (4) Does handedness skill predict children’s reading and mathematical performance?

About the Speaker:

Mo Zheng is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology, Chinese University of Hong Kong. He obtained his PhD from University of Southern California and was a postdoc fellow at the University of Hong Kong before joining CUHK. His research focuses on genetic and environmental influences that are associated with children's language and mathematical development.

This seminar presents findings from a short-term longitudinal study with early adolescents in Hong Kong and Chongqing (an inland metropolis in the Mainland of China) that show in the two regions: 1) mean-level differences in conceptions of adolescence held by youth, and 2) relation-level similarities in reciprocal pathways between youth’s conceptions and their socioemotional functioning

Cultural influences on the relation between cognitive and environmental factors and academic achievement

 

Does culture moderate the relations between cognitive skills and children’s academic achievement? To what extent the relation between home environment and academic achievement appears to be similar across languages and cultures? In this seminar, I will present my recent research on the cognitive and environmental correlates of academic achievement (literacy and numeracy) across diverse languages and cultures. A particular focus will be placed on a longitudinal study contrasting literacy acquisition in two logographic orthographies in East Asian contexts, Chinese and Japanese. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings will be discussed.

About the Speaker:

Prof. Tomohiro Inoue obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Tsukuba (Japan) in 2012. He stayed in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta (Canada) as a Visiting Professor from 2016 to 2018. Prof. Inoue’s current research focuses on cognitive and environmental correlates of academic achievement across languages and cultures; risk and protective factors for learning disabilities; reading instruction and interventions.

Well-being theorists have long debated whether human flourishing is achievable through deriving pleasure (hedonism) or achieving purpose in life and personal growth (eudemonism). Flow is a subjective state characterized by intense engagement, concentration, and enjoyment, and it is considered to be an optimal experience that fits both the hedonic and eudemonic paradigms. In this seminar, I will present my work regarding the situational and dispositional antecedents as well as the outcomes of flow. I will also present my newest findings on meaningful engagement and its association with psychological well-being in multiple settings.

About the Speaker:

Dwight Tse is a postdoctoral researcher at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Claremont Graduate University, USA in 2019. Dwight’s research interests include topics ranging from positive psychology and well-being science to aging and lifespan developmental psychology. Broadly defined, his work examines the impact of flow experiences, meaningfulness, and prosocial acts on psychological and physical well-being, using diverse methods such as experience sampling and lab-based psychophysiological experiments. His publications can be found in specialized, peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences and The Journal of Positive Psychology.

Understanding environmentalism beyond individual process: Insights from socioecological psychology

 

Research studies have found how various personal factors (e.g., gender, political orientation, values) relate to people’s concerns for environmental issues and their support for environmental protection. However, most of these studies overlooked the influence of the broader socioecological contexts (e.g., culture, economic condition, quality of governance) on these individual processes, which limits the understanding and promotion of environmentalism– a global issue that involves diverse populations. We address this limitation by investigating how societal-level factors influence individual processes in shaping environmentalism. This seminar will showcase our studies that use this approach to advance the understanding of environmental concern and behavior, and discuss how to apply this approach to address other global issues in the future.

About the Speaker:

Hoi-Wing Chan is now a postdoctoral fellow at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his PhD degree from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2018. He has a broad interest in understanding the reciprocal relationship between people and the environment. His major research interests include pro-environmental behavior, socioecological influence, climate change opinions, and conspiracy beliefs. His work suggests the need to consider the influences of the broader cultural and socioecological contexts in understanding how people respond to environmental issues.

Application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy for the study of brain development and aging

 

Compared to the rest of the brain, the frontal lobe is the last to reach full maturity but is the first to undergo deterioration with aging. Finding out how frontal lobe functions change with development and aging would thus give us invaluable insights into changes in cognition over time. In this talk, I will present on the application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to study the development and aging of frontal lobe functions. First, I will review its application in research on healthy development and aging. I will then highlight how the application of fNIRS has enhanced our mechanistic understanding of some developmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, and aging-related diseases, including mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Finally, the potential utility of fNIRS in the rehabilitation of people with developmental and aging-related diseases will be discussed.

About the Speaker:

Michael Yeung is a postdoctoral researcher at the Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2018 before moving to Canada. Michael’s research focuses on understanding functions of the human frontal lobe especially in the context of development and aging. He is particularly interested in using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), electroencephalography (EEG), and the lesion method to find out the role of the frontal lobe in specific aspects of executive function, emotion recognition, and decision-making. His work has suggested a relationship between frontal lobe dysfunction and cognitive deficits in children with autism spectrum disorder and older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

Neurocognitive mechanisms of reward-based decision making

 

The pervasiveness of irrational decision-making in almost every area of human endeavor highlights the importance of understanding the neurobiological and computational basis of reward-based decision-making. Contradicting with utility maximization principles, our research has shown that choices are susceptible to influences from exogenous and endogenous contexts. Using neuroeconomic methods, we demonstrate that the striatum and vmPFC seem to encode decision parameters in a context-dependent fashion, which may explain a range of decision biases. I will also showcase our findings in the application of neuroeconomics to the study of aging and psychiatry disorders.

About the Speaker:

Rongjun Yu is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the National University of Singapore since 2014. He received his PhD in Cognitive Science from MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, University of Cambridge in 2011 and his M.S. in Psychology from Peking University in 2007. His research interests focus on decision biases and social cooperation. In his work, he applies a wide range of methods, including behavioural experiments, pharmacological manipulation, computational modelling, and brain imaging (fMRI/EEG/fNIRS). He also studies these topics through developmental and clinical lenses.

In this seminar, I will present my research on why such changes occur (antecedents) and how the changes influence people’s cognitive processes, social behaviors, and well-being (consequences).

Xianmin Gong is a postdoctoral researcher at University of Zurich, Switzerland. He received his master’s degree from Beijing Normal University in 2013 and PhD degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2017. These outcomes can often be achieved via the joint efforts of both partners. In this presentation, I will present my works about the dyadic processes involved in communication of responsiveness and emotion regulation during conflict resolution.

Prof. Hui is currently an assistant professor of psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He obtained his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Northwestern University. His key research areas are self-regulation and close relationships. What does the spatial-temporal pattern of EEG data reveal about human object recognition?

 

With electroencephalogram (EEG) data, we often adopt event-related potential (ERP) analysis, i.e., averaging the activation across the trials of a condition for a certain channel or group of channels. When an ERP component reveals higher activation for one condition over another, a question arises as to what this means. For example, does higher activation mean more engagement of the brain, or does it mean less efficient processing? In the past 15 years, multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) of neuroimaging data has shown that the variation of activation across brain recording locations and time can reveal more information than traditional univariate analysis. However, compared with studies using fMRI, it is much less common for EEG studies to adopt MVPA. In this talk I will give a conceptual introduction of multivariate analysis of neuroimaging data, and share our recent experience in using this technique in three EEG studies of perception. These studies involved different modalities (visual and auditory), participants (novices and experts of a domain), and data specifics (e.g., 20-128 channels). I will discuss how MVPA helps inform object recognition in these studies, and also the strengths and weaknesses of the technique.

Alan Wong is an associate professor at the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He had his undergraduate and master training at the Chinese University of Hong Kong before receiving his PhD degree from Vanderbilt University. Individual Differences in Face Cognition: Psychometrics and Neural Underpinnings

 

Fast and accurate processing of faces (person identity, emotion, eye gaze, speech movements, gender, attractiveness) is essential for human communication and interaction. During the last 10 years my colleagues and I have studied differences between persons and the underlying neural mechanisms in a number of large-scale experiments. I will first summarize our results about the cognitive structure of face cognition and whether it is affected by age and gender. Then I will report our research on the neural mechanisms of individual differences in face cognition, as reflected in event-related brain potentials.

 

About the Speaker:

Werner Sommer received his PhD degree from the University of Konstanz and was Professor for Biological Psychology and Psychophysiology at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin until his retirement in 2018. His current research interests are cognitive control, face processing, individual differences in socio-emotional processes, language, eating/meals, and hypnosis, using mainly (but not exclusively) event-related brain potentials as research tool. Prof. Sommer currently engages in several international research cooperations, including partners at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Efficiency drive for psychological intervention: How? Can technology/internet help? Will effectiveness/efficacy be eventually compromised?

 

There is emerging consensus that psychological intervention does help. However, demand is fast outgrowing the supply. In recent years, there is a determined effort to enhance the efficiency of psychological intervention so that more needy individuals can share the limited resources. In this talk, I will present three preliminary clinical trials which represent three different approaches of driving efficiency, including shortening the intervention, transdiagnostic treatment of multiple disorders, and internet-based therapy minimizing therapist's involvement. The burning question is whether these efforts compromise or trade effectiveness/efficacy for efficiency. 

About the Speaker:

Prof. Patrick W L Leung is a trained clinical psychologist. Before joining the academic world, he had 10 years of full-time clinical practice at a local children's hospital. This clinical experience leads to his research interests in child and adolescent psychopathology, such as ADHD and ASD. Recently, he develops a second line of research, i.e., establishing and validating treatment protocols for various common mental disorders for evidence-based clinical practice.

Self-representation in the dissociative mind

 

Dissociation is a common symptom of a group of mental disorders with an intimate relation with psychological trauma. Yet, this role of psychological trauma in the pathogenesis of dissociation is under heated debate, for the varying strength of the relationship between trauma and dissociation in the nonclinical and clinical populations. In the current talk, I will introduce a new framework for the link between trauma and dissociation. I argue that there may be a neurocognitive diathesis that moderates the response to traumatic stress. The sociocognitive experiments conducted in our laboratory to examine this hypothesis will be reviewed.  

About the Speaker:

Prof. Chui-De Chiu obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at National Taiwan University. He stayed in Leiden University (The Netherlands) and Central Institute of Mental Health at Mannheim (Germany) as a visiting scholar and then as a post-doctoral scientific researcher from 2012 to 2013. He has been appointed as assistant professor at the Department of Psychology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong since December, 2013.

Pain and the Brain: Fears and Phantoms

 
Chronic pain can impose immense personal and societal costs. The pain itself is only part of the problem: anxiety about pain in the future also contributes. Functional imaging shows that related, yet separate, brain circuits underlie these different aspects of painful experiences. Signals that an impending event could be particularly painful make subjects more anxious and enhance perceived pain intensities, through yet further circuits. Might signals that reduce anxiety about impending pain therefore reduce perceived pain intensity? Finally, could understanding the neural basis of phantom limb pain lead to interventions that ameliorate this highly distressing, yet treatment-resistant, condition.
About the Speaker:

Professor Nick Rawlins became Master of Morningside College in December 2018. He is a behavioural neuroscientist whose research spans areas including the neural basis of memory, brain degeneration, pain and anxiety. He completed his BA and DPhil at University College, Oxford and was appointed to a series of posts there before becoming Watts Professor of Psychology in 2007 and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Development and External Affairs in 2010. On leaving Oxford in 2017 he became Vice-President (Development and International) of the Toulouse School of Economics. He is Emeritus Professor of Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Oxford where he also holds Emeritus Fellowships at University College and Wolfson College. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Visual features for perception, attention, and working memory: Toward a three-factor framework  

 
Visual features are the general building blocks for attention, perception, and working memory. Here, I tried to combine the strengths of experimental and correlational approaches in a novel way by developing an individual-item differences analysis to extract the factors from 16 stimulus types on the basis of their roles in eight tasks. Three orthogonal factors were identified which correspond respectively to featural strength (i.e., how close a stimulus is to a basic feature), visual strength (i.e., visual quality of the stimulus), and spatial strength (i.e., how well a stimulus can be represented as a spatial structure). This FVS framework is subsequently extended to additional tasks and applied to study various questions such as the processing of Chinese characters, movements, and colors.  
 
About the Speaker:

Liqiang Huang works in the Department of Psychology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on visual attention and its role in visual perception, visual awareness, and visual working memory. His undergraduate training was in Optical Engineering at Zhejiang University, followed by a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from UC San Diego, and postdoctoral research at Princeton University.

A rhythm account of statistical learning

 

Even from a brief exposure to an artificial spoken language, infants and adults can identify candidate word forms and other adjacent and non-adjacent dependencies present in the acoustic input. Among the influential theories resulting from this research is the proposal that humans compute conditional probabilities of adjacent and non-adjacent elements to discover underlying structure. However, there exist findings in the literature, including the results presented here, that are not consistent with such accounts. We propose that the perception of rhythm played an important role in prior studies, and in general that rhythm perception plays a critical role in determining which dependencies listeners can identify. We created a novel experimental paradigm to introduce a rhythm in the language stream that allowed us to manipulate the rhythm systematically. We showed that even learning adjacent dependencies with conditional probabilities of 1.0 depends on rhythm perception. We also developed a computational model to explain word segmentation in terms of rhythm perception, and we present simulations showing that the model captures patterns of human data from multiple experiments. We argue that the perception of rhythm holds explanatory power not only to our experiments and other dependency learning studies, but it is likely to be a fundamental mechanism that is ubiquitous in language and other auditory domains.

About the Speaker:

Felix Wang received his Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Southern California in 2016 with Dr. Toben Mintz and Jason Zevin. After graduation, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, with Dr. Lila Gleitman and John Trueswell. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His work focuses on two broad themes, statistical learning of how elements are structured in a sequence and the learning of the meaning of words. His work on statistical learning uses artificial language studies to simulate how children discover the structure of their language, when properties of the language are controlled. His work on word learning focuses on two Quinian problems: the problems of referential ambiguity and semantic ambiguity. Methodologically, he builds computational models of language acquisition and conduct behavioral experiments with infants, children, and college students. His goals in these work is to try to identify the cognitive mechanisms that underlie the process of language acquisition.

Making sense of time in the human mind

 

While we are all experts in “experiencing time”, introspection provides us with very little intuition regarding the neural mechanisms supporting time perception and temporal cognition. In this talk, I will discuss the importance of clocking mechanisms for the biology of the mind, and how oscillations help reframing temporalities from the perspective of the brain itself (as generator-observer of events) in opposition to that of the external observer (as information reader). I will illustrate this point by focusing on the role of oscillatory activity in low-level temporal logistics of information processing, yielding temporal order and behavioral precision. Second, I will focus on the notion that conscious timing does not linearly map onto neural timing – i.e., that psychological temporalities are represented abstractly and intelligibly - and exemplify this with recent work focused on the generative nature of the psychological time arrow (mental time travel), and the ability to introspect about one’s self-generated timing productions (temporal metacognition).

About the Speaker:
Virginie van Wassenhove received her PhD in Neurosciences and Cognitive Sciences (NACS program, 2004) at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) under the direction of Prof David Poeppel and Dr Ken W. Grant. During her graduate training, she focused on the perception (psychophysics) and cortical bases (MEG, EEG, fMRI) of audiovisual speech as a specific case of multisensory integration and predictive coding. In 2005, she worked with Prof Srikantan Nagarajan (UCSF) on learning and plasticity in audition and in audiovisual perception with combined psychophysics and MEG. From 2006 to 2008, she was implicated in various projects at UCLA (Dr Ladan Shams, Dr Dean Buonomano) and at Caltech (Prof Shinsuke Shimojo) which included implicit multisensory statistical learning, time perception, gesture communication, and interpersonal interactions. Late 2008, she joined the Cognitive Neuroimaging Unit directed by Prof Stanislas Dehaene to build NeuroSpin MEG. In 2012, she became an INSERM group leader of the Brain Dynamics research team. In 2013, she obtained her HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches; highest degree achievable in France) and became CEA Director of Research (DR). Her research interests focus on temporal cognition and multisensory integration.

About the Speaker:

Dr Suzanne So is Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology, CUHK. She obtained her BSc in University of Oxford, MSSc (Clinical Psychology) in CUHK, and PhD in King’s College London. With the support of the UGC Teaching Award and the CUHK Micro-module Courseware Development Grant Scheme, she has developed two sets of micro-modules on clinical psychology and clinical supervision.

Dr Letty Kwan is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology, CUHK. She obtained her BSc in University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and her PhD in University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Biomarkers and neurodevelopmental disorders - lessons from EEG-based markers of ADHD

 

Biomarkers are informative biological correlates of disorders, but hardly meet the strict validity, sensitivity, specificity and replication requirements for clinical application. EEG-based markers in ADHD have revealed multiple impaired and preserved functions, heterogeneous EEG clusters undercutting clinical subtypes, and markers of remission and persistence. However, diagnostic classification of ADHD based on simple EEG markers such as the Theta/Beta ratio or cognitive ERPs was not validated, and is not recommended by clinical guidelines. Multimodal pattern recognition can improve classification, but also requires independent replication and validated mechanisms. Validating predictive biomarkers that characterize course, outcome and treatment response seem most promising. Particularly for neurodevelopmental disorders validated predictive biomarkers could guide early detection, prevention and precision medicine interventions across disorders, moving beyond a narrow focus on single disorders, core deficits, and categorical diagnoses.

About the Speaker:

Daniel Brandeis is Professor at the Universities of Zurich and Heidelberg, with research groups at the Departments of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Zurich and at the ZI Mannheim. Following Masters in Neuroscience at ETH Zurich and in Psychology at UBC Vancouver, he completed his PhD at ETH Zurich focusing on brain mapping of attention and reading in the Neurology Department in Zurich. After postdoctoral positions in San Francisco, Zurich and Mito, he focuses on mechanisms and treatments of neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD, Dyslexia, aggression and autism, using translational EEG- and MR-based imaging and neurofeedback.

“What have you done for me lately?” A brief history of my attempts at “impact” in academia

 

Departments in universities around Hong Kong are currently grappling with the issue of how best to create and communicate “impact” in our institutions. The RAE exercise of evaluation emphasizes impact for the first time in Hong Kong. In this talk, I will give a personal history of my motivations, attempts, and actions vis-à-vis impact. We will also consider different definitions and motivations for impact in a broader sense. At the university level in Hong Kong, impact has very specific definitions and requirements, some of which fit better with RAE criteria than others. Yet ultimately, each of us in academia has some responsibility to answer the question, common among governments and the general public, as to “What have you done for me lately?” My discussion will be an attempt to map my research to the broader theme of impact and to talk generally about academics’ current engagements with the public.

About the Speaker:

Catherine McBride is a professor of developmental psychology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She spent the last academic year as a Senior Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Study (FRIAS) in Germany, working on a book entitled Coping with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and ADHD: A Global Perspective (Routledge, 2019). The author of over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, she is a past President of the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading and current President of the Association for Reading and Writing in Asia. She has also served as an associate editor of four different journals and on editorial boards of several others. With collaborators, she has published research on reading and writing in Arabic, Bemba, Chinese, Dutch, English, German, Hebrew, Korean, and Spanish. Her main interests focus on similarities and differences in reading development and impairment across languages, scripts, and cultures.

In this talk, I will shortly introduce the theoretical aspects of LME modeling and provide an overview on how LME modeling may be implemented in R (https://www.r-project.org/). Specifically, I will give a beginner’s tour of the R Studio environment (https://www.rstudio.com/), discuss LME modeling alternatives and syntax, and how to conduct significance testing of full models and of follow-up comparisons. Last, I will share my experience of the current status of the application of LME modeling in the psychological literature and provide some guidelines as to how such modeling should be documented in manuscripts to be submitted for publication.

Reduced Frontal Activations at High Working Memory Load in Mild Cognitive Impairment: Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

 

Some functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have reported altered activations in the frontal cortex during working memory (WM) performance in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but the findings have been mixed. The objective of the present study was to utilize near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), an alternative imaging technique, to examine neural processing during WM performance in individuals with MCI. Results showed that the MCI group, unlike the NC group, did not exhibit significantly increased frontal activations bilaterally when WM load increased. Compared to the NC group, the MCI group had similar frontal activations at low load (p > 0.05 on all channels) but reduced activations at high load (p < 0.05 on 4 channel). In addition, we found a positive correlation between the left WM-related frontal activations and WM ability primarily in the NC group (rs = 0.42, p = 0.035), suggesting a relationship between frontal hypoactivation and WM difficulties.

About the Speaker:

Chan Sui Yin, Agnes is currently a professor at the Department of Psychology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Director of the Chanwuyi Research Center for Neuropsychological Well-Being. She obtained a doctoral degree in 1995 majoring in clinical neuropsychology from the University of California at San Diego. Prof. Chan’s research interest has been on clinical neuropsychology and neuropsychological intervention. Her research has been published in Top-ranking journals includingNature, Archive of Neurology, Cancer, Neuropsychology and Journal of Affective Disorder. In 2004, Professor Chan was awarded the Early Career Award by the American Psychological Association, and has held several honorary positions including Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and Consultant to the Alzheimer's disease Research Center at the University of California at San Diego. EEG data contain temporal and spatial (topographic) information. The analysis of topographic information is useful, because it reflects the neural source configurations in the brain. In this talk I will give a short introduction into topographic EEG analyses and then provide a hands-on-tutorial with the software RAGU (Randomization Graphical User Interface; the software can be downloaded at http://www.thomaskoenig.ch/index.php/work/ragu/1-ragu). Using RAGU, I will demonstrate how to compute a Topographic Analysis of Variance (TANOVA) and a Microstates Analysis with EEG data.

Urs Maurer is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Previously, he was a Research Professor at the University of Zurich and a postdoctoral fellow at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York. We maintain stable representations of the world via interactions of incoming sensory input and existing conceptual knowledge about the world. Distinct concepts, such as animate and inanimate entities, often share vast and systematic differences in visual features. As the brain transforms percepts into concepts, to what extent the mental and neural representations contain visual vs. conceptual information? In this talk, I present behavioral and neural evidence that the well-documented distinction between animal and object representations are unlikely merely due to differences in low-level visual or shape properties. Instead, the involvement of higher-level conceptual influences may play a critical role for interpreting visual input during categorization.

Olivia Cheung is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at New York University Abu Dhabi. Her research aims to understand how we utilize multiple sources of knowledge to perceive the visual world. Olivia holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Vanderbilt University. Brain network functional dynamics in neuropsychiatric disorders: linking connectivity to behaviour

 

Previous work has demonstrated that the spatial patterning of each neurodegenerative disease relates closely to a distinct functional intrinsic connectivity network mapped in the healthy brain with “resting-state” fMRI. This talk will first describe how brain network functional connectivity shed light on the vulnerable network-breakdown mechanisms in different neurodegenerative disorders. Evidence on longitudinal functional connectivity changes underlying cognitive impairment in healthy older adults and the influence of APOE genotype will be presented. Moreover, our work on persons at-risk for psychosis revealed that baseline functional connectome topological disruptions were associated with future transition to psychosis. Lastly, we will discuss new evidence on linking dynamic functional connectivity with vigilance fluctuations over time and neural substrates underlying behavioral improvement in ADHD. Further developed, brain network connectivity signatures may help predict behavioral changes, reveal disease mechanism, track disease progression, and monitor treatment response.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Juan (Helen) Zhou is an Assistant professor at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, Neuroscience and Behavioral Disorders Program, Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School, Singapore. Her lab studies the human neural bases of cognitive functions and the associated vulnerability patterns in aging and neuropsychiatric disorders, particularly neurodegenerative diseases. Multimodal neuroimaging methods and psychophysical techniques are employed, including MRI/fMRI/DTI/EEG. Prior to joining Duke-NUS in 2011, Helen was an associate research scientist at the Phyllis Green and Randolph Cōwen Institute for Pediatric Neuroscience in the Child Study Center, New York University. She did a post-doctoral fellowship at the Memory and Aging Center, Department of Neurology, University of California, San Francisco, from 2008 to 2010. She also worked as a research fellow in Singapore-MIT Alliance program from 2007- 2008. Helen received her Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering with first class honour in 2003 under the scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Singapore and her Ph.D. in Neuroimaging in 2008 from School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Helen has published in several international peer-reviewed high impact journals such as Neuron, Brain, PNAS, Neurology, Molecular Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, Journal of Neuroscience, NeuroImage, and so on. She is the Council Secretary and a program committee member of the Organization of Human Brain Mapping, a member of the Society for Neuroscience, American Academy of Neurology, and Alzheimer’s Association. Your visual system evolved and developed to process the scenes, faces, and objects of the natural world. You then adapt that same system to process the artificial worlds of graphs, diagrams, data visualizations. This adaptation can lead alternatively to fast and powerful – or deeply slow and inefficient – visual processing. I'll demonstrate these capacity limits using interactive visual tasks, especially those limits that arise when we extract structure and meaning from artificial displays. Understanding these constraints leads to guidelines for STEM pedagogy and display design, and opens new questions for basic research on visual thinking.

About the Speaker:

Steven Franconeri is a Professor of Psychology at Northwestern, and Director of the Northwestern Cognitive Science Program. His research is on visual thinking, visual communication, and the psychology of data visualization. He directs the Visual Thinking Laboratory, where a team of researchers explore how leveraging the visual system - the largest single system in your brain - can help people think, remember, and communicate more efficiently. His undergraduate training was in computer science and cognitive science at Rutgers University, followed by a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Harvard University, and postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia. His work on both Cognitive Science and Data Visualization has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, and the Department of Defense. He has received a National Science Foundation CAREER award, a Psychonomic Society Early Career award, and a Cattell Sabbatical award for his research on visual thinking.

Distinct ERP Correlates of Detection, Norm‐based Coding, and Identification in Face Perception

 

The strengths of event‐related brain potentials (ERPs) include a millisecond time resolution window to neural processes underlying perception and recognition of complex stimuli under relatively natural viewing conditions. I will present both systematic research conducted over the past 25 years and current data which show how we can systematically link different ERP components to different functional processes that relate to face detection (N170), norm‐based coding (P200), and identification (N250). The research I present provides converging evidence for these links emerging from investigations with diverse paradigms, including own‐race and own‐age biases in face perception, effects of facial distinctiveness and photorealistic caricaturing, effects of parametric manipulations of distance‐to‐norm in faces and their corresponding anti‐faces, and effects of facial familiarity. While basic research is yet to exploit the full potential of ERPs to investigate multiple processes in face perception, I will show a few applied examples for how these components can be used as tools to probe different aspects of face perception that are induced experimentally, or that are subject to individual differences in face recognition abilities.

About the Speaker:

Prof. Stefan SCHWEINBERGER obtained his undergraduate degree in Psychology in 1988 from Konstanz University, Germany and completed his PhD at the same institute in 1991. After some years as a post-doctoral fellow, he took up a Professor position at the University of Glasgow, UK in 2000 and moved to a Full Professor position at Friedrich-Schiller- University, Germany in 2005. There he has established a highly productive research unit for person perception that is funded by the German Research Foundation. Prof. Schweinberger has been on the editorial board of several journals including The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology and Cortex. Since 2013, he is the editor-in-chief of The British Journal of Psychology. His research focus is on face and voice processing and concerns questions related to identity recognition and racial biases, among other topics. Prof. Schweinberger is a leading neuroscientist in the field of person perception. He has published over 160 peer-reviewed articles that have attracted over 8000 citations on Google Scholar.

Music as Medicine: Can singing together prevent cognitive decline in aging?

  Cognitive function declines with advancing age and the prevalence and incidence of dementia rise dramatically in later life. Impaired cognitive function limits one’s ability to work, live and socialize, and represent a major obstacle for active and functional aging. How to maintain good cognitive health in the later stage of life is an important and challenging question that requires well‐founded research with good translational opportunities. In Singapore, we are currently working on a large randomized controlled trial that aims to assess the efficacy and underlying biological mechanisms of choral singing in the prevention of cognitive decline among at‐risk individuals living in the community (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02919748). In this talk, I will summarize status of dementia prevention in the world and in Singapore, and elaborate on the scientific rationales, study designs, outcome measures, recruitment status and short term and long term plans of the choral singing RCT.
About the Speaker:

Dr. Feng Lei is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychological Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. He received his medical and psychiatric trainings in Shandong, China and obtained his PhD from NUS in 2009. His primary research interest is the epidemiology and prevention of cognitive decline and dementia. He has over 100 research publications on aging, cognition, and mental health. He has successfully obtained research grants amounting to over three million Singapore dollars as the Principal Investigator. Meaning survives visual crowding, but not semantic integration over time

  Our visual environment is cluttered, especially during the reading process when each fixation is accompanied by words in the periphery that are crowded. We have shown previously that unrecognizable words due to visual crowding still generated robust semantic priming to the subsequent target (Yeh, He, and Cavanagh, 2012, Psychological Science). This result was further supported by ERP (N400 component) and fMRI (BOLD signal) experiments. Based on these findings, we further explored whether unrecognizable crowded words can be temporally integrated into a phrase. By showing one word at a time, we presented Chinese four-word idioms with either a congruent or incongruent ending word in order to examine whether the three preceding crowded words can be temporally integrated to form a semantic context so as to affect the processing of the ending word. Results from behavioral, ERP, and fMRI measures consistently showed congruency effect only in the isolated/un-crowded condition, but not the crowded condition, which does not seem to support the existence of unconscious multi-word integration. These convergent results suggest that while a single word under visual crowding can be processed unconsciously, multiple words require consciousness to temporally bind each word’s meaning together. Taken together, these results shed light on the function of consciousness in temporal semantic integration.
About the Speaker:

Professor Su-Ling Yeh is a distinguished professor in the Department of Psychology, National Taiwan University. She received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, and has been teaching at NTU afterwards. She was the recipient of academic awards of Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology. Her research interests include vision, attention, consciousness, multisensory perception, emotion, word recognition, aging, blue light effect, statistical regularity, and applied research on image processing and display technology.
To understand the conscious and unconscious processes, Professor Yeh’s lab has used different techniques to block participants’ consciousness while keeping unconscious processing intact. These techniques include crowding, masking, inattentional blindness, repetition blindness, motion induced blindness, and continuous flash suppression, with behavioral and brain-imaging techniques such as EEG, ERP, MEG, and fMRI. Her lab is also interested in the relationship between emotion, perception, attention, working memory, and consciousness.
Professor Yeh has extensive experience in leading research teams and initiating international collaborative projects. Interdisciplinary collaborations include applied research on perceptual video and image processing, portable eye-tracker and gaze contingent display, affective computing, blue-light effect, and assistive robots for elderly people.

Semantic Retrieval and Integration during Sentence Reading: Evidence from Temporal and Spatial Dynamics

  Ultimate goal of language comprehension is to understand meaning from the given information flow. In this talk, I will discuss two sets of our studies about lexical-semantic retrieval and semantic integration processes that are crucial to this goal. In the first set of studies, we used high temporal resolution techniques, such as eye tracking and ERP methodologies, to examine the very early stage of these two processes during Chinese sentence comprehension. We show that in contrast to previous findings that there is little evidence for a semantic parafoveal preview effect during the reading of alphabetic languages, high-level linguistic information can be obtained from preview processing and be integrated into the context very rapidly. Moreover, context exerts a significant effect in the semantic preview processing, suggesting that different levels of information processing are highly parallel and interacted during Chinese sentence reading. Next, I will discuss results from a set of imaging studies, including fMRI and EROS (event-related optical signal), to separate the cortical network of lexical-semantic retrieval and semantic integration in language processing, and to explore the temporal and spatial dynamics of these networks during sentence reading comprehension.
About the Speaker:

Suiping Wang, PhD, is a cognitive psychologist who has extensive experience on study both the temporal and spatial dimensions of language comprehension using multimodal behavior and imaging techniques, such as eye movement, ERPs, and fMRI. She earned her PhD in Psychology at South China Normal University in 2000. Her PhD thesis was awarded “National Top 100 Doctoral Dissertation” by Ministry of Education, P. R. China in 2002. For more than 15 years, she has been studying how the different aspects of language (lexical, semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic) contribute to the mental representation of sentence and discourse processing in the brain. She is also interested in the relationship between the cognitive mechanisms of language processing and those of other kinds information processing. She is the Principal Investigator on several projects that use multimodal imaging techniques to study both the temporal and spatial dimensions of cognition in the brain. More recently, she has been working on language project with special populations, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and individuals with cochlear implant. She has published in a wide range of international peer-reviewed journals, such as Cerebral Cortex, Neuroimage, Neuropsychologia, Language and Cognitive Processes, Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, et al. Dr Cathy Fernandes originally trained as a psychopharmacologist at King’s College London working in the research field of anxiety and drug dependence. She currently heads the ‘Preclinical Models of Neurodevelopmental Disorders’ group at the SGDP Centre (Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London) investigating the contribution of genetic and environmental mechanisms to a range of neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders. In addition to studying the role of genes in behaviour, she also has a particular interest in the interaction of genes with early life stressful environments and drug exposure.
Dr. Fernandes has more than 20 years of learning and teaching experience at King’s College London, first as a student and then as a teacher. My teaching ranges from undergraduate to postgraduate to specialist courses.

The Social Construction of Adolescence: Insights from the United States and China

  The research I will present focuses on the idea that how youth navigate adolescence is shaped in part by their views of teens, which often reflect cultural constructions of adolescence. The first set of studies I will discuss indicates that American and Chinese youth take different pathways (e.g., in terms of their engagement in school) through early adolescence. The second set of studies suggests that one reason for the different pathways is that culture influences youth’s conceptions of adolescence, with Western culture leading youth to see this phase more as a time of “storm and stress”. The third set of studies explores the role of youth’s views of teens in their development during adolescence in more depth, with attention to whether changing such views influences their behavior.
About the Speaker:

Eva Pomerantz received her PhD from the Department of Psychology at New York University. Since then, she has been a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Pomerantz’s research focuses on how to motivate youth in school to facilitate their learning, particularly as youth navigate adolescence. Although Dr. Pomerantz has spent much of her career studying this issue in the United States, she has also studied it in China where youth’s achievement is higher than that of their American counterparts. Dr. Pomerantz has published over 75 papers in scholarly journals and edited volumes. Her research has been featured in multiple media outlets as well. Dr. Pomerantz has been an Editorial Consultant for the journals Child Development and Developmental Psychology. She also served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Future Orientation: Temporal Correlates, Genetic Mechanisms, and their Implications for Health Behaviors and Depression

  Future orientation refers to the extent to which an individual thinks about the future, anticipates future consequences, and plans before acting. In this presentation, we aim to broaden our understanding of future orientation in terms of four aspects: (1) We investigated the relationship between future orientation and time perception through three paradigms, namely experimental discounting, task prioritization, and the temporal Doppler effect. We found that future orientation involves underestimating future temporal distance and accurately perceiving the importance of future events. (2) We explored the role of future orientation in dietary behaviors and preventing air pollution, and identified planning as a key mediator in health behavioral change. (3) We found evidence for future orientation in buffering the kindling effect of depression and its emotional regulation function, using longitudinal and laboratory studies. Further, based on these findings, a low‐intensity intervention program, Positive Future Imagery Modification, was developed, and a randomized control trial study confirmed its effectiveness in treating mild depression. (4) We examined the interactions of the FKPB5/COMT Val158Met polymorphism and stress (early stressful life events, experimental prime) on the development and manifestation of future orientation. We demonstrated that the TT genotype in FKBP5 was associated with higher levels of future orientation in a positive environment, whereas the Met/Met genotype in COMT Val158Met was associated with higher levels of future orientation in more adverse conditions.
About the Speaker:

Yiqun Gan is a professor at School of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences, Peking University, China. She has received her Ph.D. in the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1998. She has published over 90 research papers as the first or corresponding author, and her findings were published in the top international journals such as Journal of Personality and Health Psychology. She has been the PI of a number of research projects funded by the National Science Foundation of China. She was invited to a present as a Transversal Keynote Speaker at the International Congress of Applied Psychology in 2014, and to convene an Invited Symposium at the International Congress of Psychology in 2012 and at the International Congress of Applied Psychology in 2018. She currently serves as an Associate Editor for Journal of Pacific Rim Psychology and as an editorial board member for Applied Psychology: Health and Well-being and Stress and Health. Her research on future orientation and resilience has embraced numerous state-of-the-art techniques such as laboratory experiments, molecular genetics, physiological indexes, eye tracking, and ERP, which has placed her work on the cutting edge of the science. She has won the title of “Recognized Psychologist” by the Chinese Psychological Society in 2016, and was nominated as a fellow of the International Association of Applied Psychology in 2017.

Applied Decision (Neuro)science: Culture, Beauty and Architecture

  We challenge the theoretical and methodological boundaries of decision sciences by expanding to atypical research domains. The first set of studies will examine an omnipresent but understudied choice phenomenon: how people decide for other people (called “allocentric”)– as opposed to deciding for themselves (“egocentric”). Our results show that culture drastically determines allocentric decision mechanisms. The second part explains how seemingly irrelevant social judgments impact perception of (facial) beauty ‐ and vice versa. The third part will present preliminary data of a set of qualitative, experimental and longitudinal studies of human attitudes and responses towards architectural characteristics of indoor working spaces. Throughout the presentation, some (relatively new) methodological tools will also be presented. Overall, this research underlines the importance of context for elucidating decision‐making mechanisms.

George Christopoulos is a Decision Neuroscientist (University of Cambridge; postdoc at Cambridge, Baylor College of Medicine and Virginia Tech) with extensive research experience in neurobehavioral accounts of human behavior. He is Assistant Professor at Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Research Director of the Culture Science Institute.
A series of studies identified the neural correlates underlying risk attitudes (PNAS, 2009; Journal of Neuroscience, 2009, 2010), while more recent studies employed neuro-computational approaches to understand the neurobehavioral and cultural accounts of aspects of social decision making - such as cooperation, competition, beauty / aesthetics and social influence (Nature Neuroscience, 2015, Neuroimage 2015). A new research stream explores the effects of the development of Mega-Cities and urbanicity on human behaviour, mental health and performance.
Methodologically, he adopts a rich, multi-disciplinary approach combining different methods including (i) lab-based methods (behavioral game theory) (ii) cognitive neuroscience (fMRI, eye-tracking and electrodermal responses) (iii) computational approaches (iv) field studies with real-world applications while exploring new methods (wearable devices and virtual reality).
His lab has received well over $1.1M in external funding from both government and industry. This research has been showcased in various media, including the French TV and Channel News Asia; finally, he has been consulting major companies in Singapore and overseas.

The Effects of Prior Familiarity on Working Memory Representations and Processes

  Prior stimulus familiarity can influence visual working memory (VWM) representations and processes in various ways based on some recent behavioral and Event‐Related Potential findings. First, VWM representations for familiar stimulus can be accessed faster than unfamiliar stimulus. Second, this speed advantage can also manifest to VWM consolidation in that familiar stimulus is encoded into VWM faster than unfamiliar stimulus. Third, faster VWM consolidation for familiar stimulus could in turn lead to increases in the amount of information retained in VWM when VWM consolidation is interrupted, but not when encoding time is sufficient. Consequently the presence and absence of the consolidation effect could potentially account for the mixed findings on the capacity effects of familiarity in the literature. These findings have illustrated various sources for the facilitation of working memory by familiarity and highlighted the pivotal roles of VWM processing in the interactions between prior knowledge and moment‐by‐moment memory processing.

Dr. Zhang received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Iowa. He joined faculty at the Department of Psychology at University of California, Riverside in 2012. The research program in Dr. Zhang’s laboratory focuses on perception, memory, and higher cognition using multiple Cognitive Neuroscience methods, including eye tracking, EEG, non-invasive brain stimulation, and fMRI.

Causes, Consequences, and Neural Correlates of Visual Awareness

  How conscious experience is realized in neuronal activity is one major unsolved problem in neuroscience. Brain scientists have focused on finding neural correlates of consciousness for over two decades. Here I go beyond this correlational paradigm and use multivariate pattern analysis to investigate the causal relationship between cortical activity and visual awareness. First, I examined the neural consequences of consciousness by asking whether the pattern of neural activity in visual cortex can be altered by a change in the interpretation of a constant visual input. Second, I examined the neural causes of consciousness by asking whether the contents of visual awareness during binocular rivalry can be biased/predicted by the neural activation pattern that immediately precedes binocular stimulus presentation. My results show that the pattern of neural activity in visual cortex not only reflects changes of subjects’ conscious interpretation of the stimulus, but also predicts subjects’ subsequent perceptual states during binocular rivalry. These findings go beyond mere correlates of consciousness to reveal candidates areas that are causally involved in realizing conscious experience.

Dr. Po-Jang (Brown) Hsieh received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Dartmouth College, USA in 2008, and was a research scientist at MIT until 2011. He is now an assistant professor at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. He is interested in understanding how the human brain is able to perceive and experience the world. He studies the human neural bases of perception, attention, and consciousness with EEG, functional brain imaging (fMRI), neural decoding methods, and psychophysical techniques.

Eye Movements in Reading:Perceptual Span and Parafoveal Processing

  It is well established that the number of times we look at words (and the durations associated with these fixations) are reliable and valid indicators of the orchestration of visual, attentional, languagerelated, memory‐related, and oculomotor processes which lead to the recognition of words and the comprehension of text. Importantly, reading involves effective extraction of information not only from currently fixated foveal words but also from upcoming parafoveal words. During a single fixation the effective field of vision is quite narrow. Comparisons across different writing systems and across different individuals will be presented, concluding that the perceptual span can be flexibly modulated by various factors. Reading also involves automatic activation of lexical representations from foveal and parafoveal words. Which aspects of these words (orthographic, phonological, morphological, semantic, etc.) become available at what time during processing is an area of much theoretical controversy. Much of the theoretical debate has been driven by languagecomparative research, especially between the reading of unspaced logographic scripts like Chinese and spaced alphabetic scripts like English or German. Studies on phonological and semantic processing of parafoveal words during the reading of English, Chinese, German and Korean sentences will be presented and discussed. In Chinese, very early semantic preview effects have been consistently demonstrated, whereas phonological preview may be less effective. These results are in nice agreement with the logographic nature of the Chinese writing system and provide support for eye‐movement models that adopt the guidance by attentional gradient assumption.
About the Speaker:

Dr. Yan received his Ph.D from the Beijing Normal University in 2008. He then works as a research scientist at the University of Potsdam, Germany. His research area is eye-movement control during reading, focusing on how reading varies across different writing systems (Simplified and Traditional Chinese, German, English, Uyghur, Finnish, Korean etc.) and across different individuals (normal adults, typically developing readers, second-language learners of Chinese, deaf readers and dyslexic readers). His main research topics include (a) the influence of high-level linguistic factors on saccade generation, (b) lexical processing from foveal and parafoveal words, (c) perceptual span in reading and (d) reading behaviors of unskilled readers and impaired readers.

New Methodologies for Assessing Emotional Intelligence using Technologies

  The main purpose of this talk is to test discuss about past and current methods for assessing Emotional Intelligence. Additionally, The statistical validity of the “Mobile Emotional Intelligence Test" (MEITPRO) will be showed. That is a test for assessing Emotional Intelligence using Smartphones and tablets. Regarding to tat last issue, data from more than 1,000 individuals from 4 different countries (Spain, United States, Germany, and Italy) were collected and analyzed for testing the reliability and validity of the scales (i.e., perception, understanding, and management of emotions). Additionally, several improvements were carried out in comparison with the classical papel‐pencil surveys for assessing EI (i.e., timeresponse control, dynamic pictures, etc.). Results showed acceptable values of reliability for this newly developed scale. Thus, this talk will highlight the reliability of a “Mobile survey” for assessing Emotional Intelligence. Implications for research and practice were discussed.
About the Speaker:

PhD. in work psychology and associate professor at Universitat Jaume I de Castellon. He is director of the “Emotionally Intelligent Organization” Research team and lecturer in subjects related to Emotions recognition, Emotional Intelligence and Communication. His areas of interests are mainly related to the assessment of Emotional Intelligence.

On the other hand, he is also consultant in organizations for selection and assessment processes. He has participated in 13 research projects and currently is the head (principal researcher) of two projects about Emotional Intelligence and Well-being. He collaborated for a year in the “Health, Emotion and Behavior Laboratory” in Yale University (USA) by the supervision of Peter Salovey and Mark Brackett where he developed and applied programs for enhancing emotional competences among employees and leaders. Additionally, is the CEO of Emotional Apps (www.emotional-apps.com) a company that applies technology to transform the existing scientific knowledge into applications by providing solutions for companies and universities.

In the last years, professor Bresó has published articles and papers in conferences regarding to Emotional perception and he is the author of the Mobile Emotional Intelligence Test (MEITPRO) that is a web application for assessing Emotional Intelligence using Computers, Smartphones and Tablets.
