Age-Friendly Digital Society: Overcoming Challenges in Technology Adoption among Older Adults Conference (5-6 Jan 2024)

The "Age-Friendly Digital Society: Overcoming Challenges in Technology Adoption among Older Adults" conference successfully concluded on January 5th and 6th at Yasumoto International Academic Park (YIA), LT2 (G/F), The Chinese University of Hong Kong. This two-day event brought together technology and aging professionals to enhance technology adoption among older adults, featuring multidisciplinary experts from diverse cultures exchanging cutting-edge theories and practices to foster research collaboration. By addressing aging challenges, promoting inclusive technology adoption, and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, the conference aimed to drive meaningful knowledge sharing. The conference attracted 67 registered participants from around the world, with 40 attendees present on both days, and showcased a range of expertise and perspectives from accomplished researchers and professionals. It was held as a hybrid event, allowing participants to join in person or virtually via Zoom. The conference received 16 poster submissions, with 10 competing for the Best Poster Award, and the recipients were recognized with gift cards. With participants from seven major locations and representation from over 27 academic and industrial institutions, the conference showcased a truly international collaboration and fostered a diverse exchange of ideas.

40th Anniversary Conference on Hope and Resilience (20 May 2023)

The major event of the 40th anniversary celebration of our Department took place at CUHK on May 20, 2023, with a conference in which international scholars and our alumni at different stages of their academic career shared their research experiences with us. The theme of the day was “Hope and Resilience”. Prof. Helene Fung, Department Chairperson, and Prof. Chi-yue Chiu, Dean of Social Science, officiated at the opening ceremony. Around 80 guests attended the conference.

Greater Bay Area Young Scholars Forum on Psychological Science (8-10 October 2021)

On October 8-10, 2021, the Department co-organised the Greater Bay Area Young Scholars Forum on Psychological Science with Shenzhen University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Sun Yat-Sen University, The Education University of Hong Kong and The University of Macau. The forum was held in hybrid mode (in-person at Shenzhen University and online via Tencent), and It aims to provide psychology students in the Greater Bay Area with opportunities for academic exchange, professional development, and collaboration incubation.

In the forum, we have four invited talks by Prof. Keith W. Kelley, Prof. Nancy Eisenberg, Prof. Jeffrey Arnett and Prof. Art Kramer. 30 and 59 students gave oral and poster presentations respectively. The forum attracted over 100 attendees in the Greater Bay Area.

U.S.-Hong Kong 2018 Conference: "Aging Across Time and Contexts" (19-20 May 2018)



On May 19-20, 2018, the Department co-organized an international Conference on aging with the CUHK-NCKU Joint Centre for Positive Social Science and The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. This Conference provided a differentiated perspective on individual constructions of old age and took an international format to investigate the phenomenon of aging by comparing individuals of different age groups or socioeconomic backgrounds. In the Conference, a publication workshop with the theme “How to Publish in GSA Journals” was conducted by Dr Laura Sands, GSA’s Editor-in-Chief of Innovation in Aging and Dr Rachel Pruchno, Editor-in-Chief of The Gerontologist. The Conference had attracted over 250 attendees worldwide from many countries such as China, U.S., Australia, Switzerland, Israel, Germany and Czech Republic.

Association for Reading and Writing in Asia (ARWA) (24-25 February, 2017)



On February 24-25, 2017, we launched a new society, called the Association for Reading and Writing in Asia (ARWA). This society was cofounded by a group of researchers interested in cross-linguistic and cross-scriptal literacy development and impairment in Asia. The conference, which took place at the Education University Hong Kong, was cosponsored by the CUHK Psychology Department. The ARWA website can be found here: http://www.psy.cuhk.edu.hk/arwa/ ARWA now has over 100 members worldwide, and the conference was attended by those from several countries and territories, including Mainland China, the Philippines, India, Australia, Singapore, the U.K., Korea, The U.S., Japan, and Hong Kong. The first president of ARWA is Professor Catherine McBride. Thanks to all who attended this inaugural meeting.
