Research Ethics

Research Ethics Approval from SBRE and CREC:-

  • When obtaining Research Ethics Approval for a study intended for publications, approval from a formal ethics review board is required.  Students should obtain approval from review boards such as the Survey and Behavioral Research Ethics (SBRE) or Clinical Research Ethics Committee (CREC), or equivalent.
  • Studies involve the following aspects MUST also go through SBRE or CREC for obtaining proper Research Ethics Approval:
    1. Deception of Subjects is necessary during the study;
    2. Sensitive aspects of the Subjects' own behaviour such as illegal conduct, drug or alcohol use, and sexual conduct;
    3. Risk of criminal or civil liability or damages to the Subjects' financial standing, employability, or reputation, as of result of the observations on the Subjects are disclosed;
    4. Potential undue psychological stress induced by the study / experiment;
    5. Pain or more than mild discomfort likely to be resulted from the study.
    6. Recording of personal and identifiable information on video via a third-party software such as Zoom.
    7. Physiological assessments (e.g., heart rate, skin conductance, brain scanning).

Department Research Ethics Review:-

  • In view of students’ research and graduation needs, the Department will handle certain student projects involving minimal risk with participants aged 15 and above.
  • Please visit the different links below for more information on obtaining Department Research Ethics Review:

 

1. Studies that RECRUIT participants from the Subject Pool  (i.e.: students from PSYC1000 course as participants);

If your study has already received Ethics Approval from the SBREC / CREC, please attach the corresponding approval in your application for the Department Research Ethics Review.

 

2. Studies that DO NOT RECRUIT participants from the Subject Pool

Please note that if you are already applying for, and will obtain ethics approval from SBRE / CREC, there IS NO NEED to apply for the Department Research Ethics Review.

 

3. Studies that RECRUIT participants BOTH FROM AND OUTSIDE the Subject Pool
