PSY 0390 Undergraduate Independent Study (STOT II)

Professor's Research Interest

Name

Research Interest

Prof. Winton Au

I would like to work with STOT II students on experimental social psychology in the areas of individual and group decision making.

In social dilemmas research I am interested in enhancing cooperation by studying people's behaviors in experimental games like prisoner's dilemma, resource dilemma, public good dilemma, and etc. Psychological factors like trust, conformity, risk attitudes, and social value orientations often affect a person's decisions to cooperate of not, especially when they are under the influence of other people or they are in the position to influence other.

My specialty is Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Thus, I will be taking students who are interested in that, and especially students who are interested in studying creativity/innovation, assessment and development issues around I/O psychology.

Prof. Agnes S.Y. Chan

My research interest is in understanding the brain and behavior. Currently we are studying the memory disorders associated with brain damaged patients and children with autistic disorders.  We used EEG machine, fMRI machine and neuropsychological tests to examine the questions.    If you are interested in working in our lab, please submit a statement (about one page) to describe your interest, and what do you want to study. As a stot II student, you are required to spend at least five hours per week in the laboratory to do research including review articles and collect data, and attend a weekly lab meeting on Thu.  You are expected to finish a review of literature on a related topic.

In collaboration with colleagues in China, we have developed a comprehensive personality inventory, CPAI, which is relevant not only to the Chinese culture, but has been found to be appropriate to Asian as well as Western cultures. The CPAI is an instrument that can be used to study personality characteristics in many contexts, including psychological adjustment, personnel decisions, personal development, and social relationships. We have developed an adolescent form of the CPAI. We are currently studying the relationship between personality and career development among college students.

In addition to personality assessment, I am also integrating a gender perspective into my psychological research. Currently, I am focusing on women's leadership and their work-family interface.

Prof. Helene H.L. Fung

I am interested in studying how goals change across adulthood, and their impacts on social relationships, emotional regulation, and cognition. I have two related lines of research: One employs field/descriptive studies to examine age-related goal changes in different sociocultural contexts; the other uses experimental methods to study the psychological processes that underlie age-related goal changes and their cross-cultural manifestations. Ultimately, I wish to develop a theory to account for how and why some cross-cultural differences in goals become more profound, while others diminish, with age.

Students who are interested in working with me should submit a one-page info on what they would like to study, the rationale for it, and how they plan to study it.

Prof. Winnie W.S. Mak

My research interests are in community psychology and health psychology. Currently, I am working on projects related to stigma of disadvantaged populations (e.g., individuals with mental illness, HIV/AIDS patients, sexual minorities to name a few) and its effect on mental health and help-seeking. I am also interested in the linkage between culture and mental health and the influences of macro factors (i.e., cultural values, neighborhood features, health care system, family dynamics) on illness behaviors.

Students enrolled in STOT II with me will engage in literature review on research topics of their own interest and in individual and/or group discussion on relevant research. The purpose is to identify a research question and to develop it into a workable thesis project. Students may also be involved in existing projects in lieu and/or in addition to their development of own thesis topic.

In addition to weekly individual meeting with me, students are required to participate in weekly lab meetings.

For interested students, please provide the following information to me:

- CV (with HKCEE & HKALE results)

- Transcripts

- Research interests & career plan

Thank you very much for your interests. I look forward to a stimulating intellectual exchange with you.

Prof. Catherine A. McBride

I am interested in projects related to children's language and reading skills or parenting style and temperament, specifically. However, I welcome students who are motivated to come up with their own projects related to other areas of development. I am most interested in working with those who are excited and motivated learners and who have some self-direction. If you would like to work with me, please give me a typed or hand-written statement of 1 page or less on your interests and why you want to do stot ii with me. (Please put these in my mailbox or under my office door--WFY359--rather than emailing them to me. Thanks.)

Prof. Qian Wang

General Expectations and Requirements for STOT II Students :

  • Students may choose either a topic relevant to my research projects or a topic of their own interests; they should conduct a literature review on their chosen topic, identify specific research questions on that topic, and develop a feasible project; a written report reflecting the aforementioned work should be turned in at the end of the course. Note that students who choose topics relevant to my research projects may be involved in data collection and use the data for their projects.
  • Students will attend biweekly group meetings and also have individual meetings with me when needed. Self-direction, initiative, creativity, diligence, conscientiousness, and cooperativeness are being looked for and aimed to be cultivated among students.
  • Students who are interested in working with me please submit the following information to me ( in my mailbox, NOT via email) – 1) a 1-page statement indicating your interests and plan for this course, and 2) CUHK transcripts before 14, Nov. 2007 for Round 1 selection or before 21, Nov. 2007 for Round 2 selection.

Prof. Alan C.N. Wong

My research is about the relationship between perception, experience, and the brain. Specifically, I study why we are so good at fast recognition of different objects. For example, most of us discriminate between different faces well (even those of twins sometimes!). We also read with an amazing speed. I study the brain activity (with EEG and fMRI) when viewing faces, letters, music notes, etc. I also measure the reaction times and accuracies when people recognize different object categories. And my other interests relate to consciousness, illusions, culture and perception, computational principles of human perception, etc.

A student working with me will be expected to conduct a literature review on a topic of interest, in order to possibly develop ideas for subsequent dissertation research. We will also have group and/or individual meetings regularly.

Students interested in working with me may send me a handwritten or typed statement (no more than 1 page) introducing yourself. You could include some of the following information:
- Your topic(s) of interest
- Why do you want to work with me?
- What you expect to achieve through the process?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Anything else that is important for me to know..
