PSY
0390 Undergraduate Independent Study (STOT II)
** Students who want to take PSY0390 in the coming year (both terms) should have to select this course through the e-CR system in the course selection period.
Sign-up
System
The sign-up system for STOT II is web-based. The purpose of this web page is to provide you with the necessary information for using the system. Please read this page carefully. However, before logging onto the system and making your selection, please keep the following in mind.
The number of STOT II students each professor is to supervise is different. For most professors, this minimum number is 5, this means that a professor will not refuse applicants for supervision until he or she has already accepted at least 5 students. For a number of professors who supervise Master of Social Science in Clinical Psychology or post-graduate diploma students, the minimum number will be lower.
It is possible that there will be higher demand for some professors than there are slots available, so you should carefully consider whom to target in your effort to get the STOT II assignment of your choice. Of course, all students are guaranteed to have a STOT II position by the end of the allocation procedure because it is a required course. However, as in previous years, you may not be working with your first or even second choice of professor.
The initial student sign-up period will occur in late August (for students requiring STOT II in either Term 1 or Term 2, e.g. exchange students, the sign-up period will occur at the beginning of September.) and will last one week. A two-day faculty-selection period will follow the sign-up period. You will NOT be able to logon to the site during the faculty selection period. When you logon to the site following the faculty selection period you will see a message at the top of the page that indicates whether your application to work with your chosen professor was successful or not.
All unsuccessful applicants must enter the second selection round. In this round, only those professors that are still accepting students will be listed, and the student sign-up period will be shorter than that for the initial sign-up period. After the sign-up period, the professors will have a day or two to make their selections. In round two, and all subsequent rounds, you will only be able to logon to the site to check whether or not you were successful after the faculty selection period is over (i.e. the next day).
If necessary, additional selection rounds will be held. In 2002, two selection rounds were required to place all students.
In each student sign-up round, the system will show you how many students have selected a given professor up to that point in time and you are free to change your selection up until the end of the sign-up period. Therefore, you can alter your choice based on how strong the competition is for a particular professor, or in response to any information you have received from a particular professor. For example, if you receive feedback from a professor during the sign-up period suggesting that it is unlikely that you will be accepted as her student, then you should probably select someone else. If you see that 30 other people have requested a professor, then you should consider carefully whether you should also select this person because only 5, at most, will be chosen. Unless you are highly optimistic that you will be one of those five, then it might be in your best interest to select someone that has a higher chance of selecting you in return. Remember, if you select a professor in the first round who is unlikely to select you, it is possible that another professor who would have selected you as a first round choice may not have any slots available for the second round. Choose carefully.
The Sign-up process
Firstly, you should select PSY0390 through the e-CR system in the couse selection period.
Then, you will receive your logon user ID and initial password via e-mail when the system is activated for this year's STOT 2 selection round (in late August). You can change your password when you logon on the system for the first time if you like.
Step 1.
Log on to the STOT II system.
Successful logon opens a page that has two links: Select a Professor and
Change your Details.
Click on the Change Details link to connect to the page where you will enter information about yourself. The information you provide here will help the professor decide whether or not to accept you as a student. It is important to provide enough information to enhance your chances of selection, but not so much that the professor does not read it all. Make sure that if you have met with the professor in person the information you provide ensures that he or she will remember meeting with you. Also make sure that if the professor knows you by a name other than your legal name (i.e., a western name or nickname), you indicate this name somewhere among your details. It would be unfortunate if your professor rejected your application just because he or she did not make a connection between your legal name and your western/nickname.
There are four information fields: student id, name, e-mail, and a details box. The e-mail address you enter here should be one that you check regularly. It is possible that the professor you select will want to contact you via e-mail during the sign-up period to ask you some additional questions or give you feedback about your chances of being selected. You can type information directly into the details box or, if you prefer, you can paste information into the details box from a word processing program. There is a limit of 1000 words in the details box, but you probably DO NOT want to use all of that space. Your professors are not going to want to read that much about every student.
After you have entered your information click on the update button to save the changes. Note: Other students will NOT be able to see your details.
Step 2.
Click on the Select a Professor link to proceed to the selection page. Here you will see a list of the psychology professors and the number of students that have applied to work with each professor so far. To choose a particular professor, highlight the button next to the Professor's name and click on Choose Professor. You may select a single Professor only. Log-out.
You can log on as many times as you like to check how many other students are competing for the same Professor. As noted above, you are free to change your selection up until the end of the student sign-up period.
Step 3.
As noted above, when you logon to the site following the faculty selection period you will see a message at the top of the page that indicates whether your application to work with your chosen professor was successful or not.
If you are not successful in Round 1, then you will enter Round 2. This process will continue until you have been assigned a STOT II supervisor.
