I
am a big fan of social psychology experiment. Running social psychology
experiment is not very different from directing a movie and it can be
a lot of fun. You need a script, you need some actors and you stage the
performance. We had our first "evil" social psychology experiment
on the second floor of the Chung Chi canteen. We were to test the bystander
effect in helping behavior. We had to control the number of bystanders.
If there were more people than we needed, we told them that the washroom
was not in use temporarily. And we communicated with our confederate who
was hiding in the one of those cubicles with a pager....All joking aside,
I learnt a lot from doing psychological experiments, and I am glad that
I am now perfecting my skills as a psychological researcher in the States.

Studying
psychology has been my aspiration since I was a F2 student. At that time,
with my limited knowledge, I thought psychology was all about mental disorders
and abnormal behaviors. After studying psychology for so many years, I
know that psychology is a broad and wide discipline! You will find studying
psychology is interesting and full of fun after learning the theories,
such as self-fulfilling prophecy, top-down processing, McGurk effect,
foot-in-the-door technique etc. You will notice how prevailing psychology
is.

M.S.Sc. in Clinical Psychology (2003-2005)
Before
enrolling in the Clinical Psychology program, many people told me that
this is a highly demanding and challenging subject. Though I have psychologically
prepared myself to face the upcoming challenges and difficulties, I must
admit that the life of a clinical psychology trainee is not easy. Nevertheless,
the days of training are also full of stimulation and satisfaction. Besides
learning intensively those knowledge related to psychological theories,
psychopathology, clinical assessment, and treatment at school, the training
also involves placements at different clinical settings. In the past few
months, I had the opportunities to conduct assessments on children with
different disorders. I also had the chance to provide treatments for children
with social phobia, learning difficulties, and adults with depression.
This learning experience really broadens my view, and the feelings that
come up when I see my clients show improvement are also unique and delightful.

"Why
does he do that?” is a question that almost all of us have asked
in the past. Through the study of Psychology, a scientific analysis
of human behavior and mental processing, I find the direction to explore
the above question.
The abundant research opportunities, accomplished faculty and wide range
of equipment provided by the Department of Psychology in CUHK have strengthened
my enthusiasm towards psychology; developed my scientific mindset and
attitude in academic research and, last but not least, created an atmosphere
for me to attain personal growth, which are all invaluable to me.
