The Perception Laboratory of the Department is equipped with the Siesta Wireless 32 channel sleep machine, which is good for the diagnosis of sleep problems by using physiological indices of EEG, breathing movement, oxygenation of blood, heart rate, EMG, leg movement, and body position. The machine can synchronically provide the video display with physiological measures, and can help diagnose s leep problems related to respiration, arousal, and limb movement separately .
The Siesta Wireless 32 channel sleep machine, together with the NeuroScan, can be used for the study of information processing in sleep. However, its application on sleep research related to EEG is very limited. Foremost, ERP method can not be applied as the timing between the application of the stimulus and the trigger is not accurate. Actually, there is no trigger. Only a note could be located manually at the point when the stimulus is to be applied. Nonetheless, it can produce an on-line summary of sleep consisting spectrum components of EEG, REM, and EMG so that the stages in sleep could be identified.
