Seminar

Orthographic memory contains representations of how words are written, which enables us not only to immediately recognize words (=fluent reading) but also to spell them accurately. In this talk, an overview of the theoretical developments will be sketched, focusing on Share's 'self-teaching' mechanism for building up an orthographic memory in beginning readers. Then a series of experiments, carried out in Dutch, Norwegian, and English will be presented and it will be shown how the outcomes of these experiments can contribute to further specifying the theory of printed word learning. Finally, plans for new research on yet unresolved issues will be discussed.
