Abstract
Although
models of children's literacy development have been largely based on
research from Indo-European languages with alphabetic scripts, studies
of Chinese and Korean children have challenged and expanded such models.
In this talk, I will review two features of early reading development
in these languages that potentially offer new directions for research
and practice. First, phonological awareness at the syllable, but not
the phoneme, level best predicts early word recognition in Chinese and
Korean. Second, morphological awareness can independently explain word
recognition and other reading skills in some studies. These findings
suggest new methods of identification for at-risk readers and new ways
to promote children's early reading skills in Chinese and Korean.
