Abstract
Coping
has been well researched due to its influential role in psychological
adjustment. Previous findings have shown that problem-focused coping
is generally adaptive. Yet, other studies revealed that problem-focused
coping can also elicit more distress, and certain "passive"
emotion-focused strategies can also relieve stress. The construct of
coping flexibility is proposed as an endeavor to resolve these mixed
findings. I will review various conceptualizations of this construct
and methods for assessing it. A microanalysis of coping processes in
which individuals flexibly deploy different coping strategies in distinct
stressful contexts will be described and discussed.
