Abstract
The
cognitive therapy model of psychopathology has highlighted the importance
of cognitive variables like cognitive distortions, schemas, response
decision, etc. in affecting disordered mood and behaviour such as depression,
anxiety, and aggression. The basic assumption is that it is not the
event itself that determines one's mood and behaviour, but instead cognitions
about the event that are the key intervening variables. Clinical therapy
experiences as well as research appear to have generally supported this
assumption. In this presentation, I am going to move a step forward
to explore how these cognitive variables may be differentially related
to different disorders. This specificity in association can in turn
help us to differentiate comorbid disorders such as depression, anxiety,
and aggression. Four studies will be presented to illustrate this endeavor.
